Life at Punda's Waterhole (Video)

Punda's waterhole can be a wonderful place to see wildlife from nearby. Many species visit together to make this a good place for animal lovers to see.

Teeming with wild life, what time of year was that Pietert?
We are mostly there in Feb and usually see very little.

Thanks everybody for the encouraging remarks. It was really wonderful to be at Punda while it was the only waterhole in the vicinity with open water. I know it is not like that all the time, but we were lucky to be there early in November to experience all these animals and birds concentrated at one place.
Maybe it will be a good idea for Sanparks to create such a waterhole and hide combination in all the camps? That will bring more people to the camps and also lessen the number of cars on the roads if driving around becomes less important.

Punda Maria Waterhole

Unread post by Goggo EJ » Thu Nov 12, 2015 4:25 pm

I know there is a topic for Punda sightings, but cannot find one specifically for the waterhole and I think it deserves its own thread.

Mods, if there is another thread please merge!

I have been sat here for 2 days and a bit, and have not felt the need to move. It is too hot anyway! Ellies have constantly visited.
Just as a taster before I get going with the camera downloads etc, here are some photos from my tablet (so quality not wonderful).

The first photo shows a bull with a shortened trunk......he spent ages drinking because he has less trunk to store water in.....but it did not stop him commanding respect from other ellies. He is definitely a dominant bull!

And the last photo shows a cow with a strangely shaped tusk....again does not affect her and she had a tiny calf with her, and was one of the dominant cows as she drank first and chased some juniors away until she had her fill.

I have enjoyed spending many an hour or 2 in the hide watching the comings and goings at the waterhole.

Had a brown snake eagle here in the dead tree in the middle of the waterhole a short while ago. Other birds were not happy!

I have seen a couple of buffalo bulls come to drink on the far side away from me, but they do not stay long.....too many ellies! Even the impala, nyala, kudu and warthogs I have seen come in and drink and disappear again quite quickly.
