Re: Identification Help - General Birds

I noticed a weird looking bird at the feeder in my garden (Potch) and went out with my camera to get a picture of it. Turns out it is a weaver losing his breeding colours (giving me a few interesting moments trying to figure it out), but as I was aiming my camera at him, this sunbird landed in the bottlebrush right next to me. I only had time to turn and snap this one picture (slightly blurred) before it took off. :cam:

Is it a female Marico sunbird? The black on the throat is confusing me a bit.

Thanks so much!

Is it not an immature Black (Amethyst) Sunbird?

Hi Maxwell, my guide books are a bit shy of good pics or descriptions of juvenile sunbirds.
I've looked at pics of Amethyst sunbirds on Birdpics and it seems to fit. Thanks so much for steering me in the right direction!

I need once again the help from the experts

Saw this little chap on the S120 (Steilberg) road in Kruger in February.

Could this be a juvenile Malachite sunbird???

Thanks for your help here :gflower:

Definitely not malachite Pumbaa.

But it doesn't look anything like its parents, so it is rather difficult.

My guess would be juvenile scarlet chested or white bellied.

Last year I noticed a male Amethyst sunbird active around a complete nest and watched for a week or so to see if any breeding activities were evident. Then, one stormy night the nest got blown off and that was that.

This morning I noticed some movement in the same White Stinkwood and lo-and-behold, the nest was back on exactly the same branch. At 4m high I will have to think a bit about getting good shots of this pair. I saw the male bird hanging around in the general vicinity, but HE wasn't building the nest... Only the female bird brought and added nesting material to the nest. I watched this onesided labouring a little amazed wondering why the male only looked on, not contributing to the nest-building. Some research was called for...

Hmmm... Apparently the male Amethyst sunbird is a real chauvinist! He keeps territorial vigil and may contribute a little to feeding the fledged chicks. Other than that he is ornamental!

The nest doesn't look complete to me. Especially the entrance to the castle looks a bit underdone. I guess the toilet paper is the avian equivalent of a red carpet!

The activities around the nest have changed: Madame Amethyst is no longer adding to the nest any of her potpourri of assorted building materials while Mister Amethyst is all wings aflutter around the nest. Maybe it is his way of showing his approval. Anyway, she is not inside the nest as yet which can mean any one of a million things. So, I’ll have to watch this Soap Opera diligently not to miss the next important nuance in this particular romance…

To get to see the entrance view I have to stand in the middle of a rather busy suburban road. So, I'll try to get a shot of the front end showing that royal entrance early tomorrow morning...

It was freezing out there early this morning... Fortunately not too much traffic...

...but also, no sign of the owners of the potty parlour!

This is the view facing me when I'm inside the security of my garden. :hmz:

I found a new angle with a resonable side-on view of the nest from the security of my garden. It is a little tricky hole that must be negotiated through a Bottlebrush, but it immediately produced an image of the hard-working Mrs Amethyst. She is spending a lot of time inside the nest now, I guess to make that part of the nest as comfortable as possible.

The Boss is still just an observer, albeit an inquisitive one... Checking out the process from a nearby branch...
