Golden Gate: Threat of Zonkeys (Zebroids)?

Unread post by Guinea Pig » Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:08 pm

Just a concern about something we just saw in Golden Gate Highlands National Park. :?

When you drive from the Basotho Cultural Village, you get the Alma cottages on your left just before you go up Lichens Pass. There we've found a large mixed herd, at the least 20 zebras and as many donkeys.....

To us that means trouble. They interbreed and give you Zebroids or Zonkeys as we used to call them as kids. Is anything being done to break up that herd? :hmz:

Hio G-Pig,

Due to the Land claims process the residence within the park are restricted to specific area in which to graze their animals. Upon completion of the land claim process all residence and domestic animals associated with the claim will be moved out of the park. The rangers are monitoring the movement of the domestic animals and use of the land by residence. To date bearing in mind that the claimants are residing within the park since the days of QwaQwa Nature Reserve which is over 20 years there are no recorded events of cross breeding between the zebras and donkeys. Should this occurs necessary steps will be taken to further restrict the grazing areas for the donkeys. Please note that even though we can restrict the movement of the donkeys we cannot do that with the zebras. The areas where the donkeys are grazing is vast enough to minimize, potential over grazing, if restricted to a smaller area then a more intensive management approach would have to be applied which at the end will mimic farming practices. Currently we are using adaptive management through monitoring that would best serve the conservation needs of the park.
