I hear what you're saying BB, and if I lived in Cape Town I would have definitely rushed off to go and see it!

Seeing that it's been confirmed that you still don't have a pic of a Pels, you better post your birds in the ID threads for help.
Check the stickies in the Bird Forum Index.

Life is not fair NetEk, but if you drive the river road opposite Balule downstream, check all the trees on the opposite bank between 1 & 2 km down from the low water bridge and you could well be in luck.

Am I correct when I say we have to narrow our search to the Balule side of the Olifants,1-2km downstream
of the low level bridge while driving on the S91?

How did you manage the angle on the second photo across the river? It looks like you stood
under the tree?

Sorry for asking so much questions, but just like NetEk and surely many others
we really want to see this elusive bird.

I was with Bush Baptist when he took these pics. We were indeed standing below the tree. The 2 owls did a flyby as well but my pic are out of focus. As a part of the bash we walked from Balule to the known area where the owls sometimes roost. With the floods a lot off their habitat was washed away. It was an amazing sight. No problem Wildkyker & NetEk.

As Sky said, we walked from Balule, down river. My 3rd Pel's sighting.

I'm sure that if you organized a walk from Olifants you could do it as well, as long as there were enough of you and they were all in agreement as to going there.

I estimate that we walked between 1 & 2 km down the southern bank of the Olifants downstream to the group of large trees on the bank, which were still there.

Juvenile Pel's Fishing Owl seen along the Olifants River on the 09th September 2015 whilst on the Olifants Backpack Trail.
We were fortunate to have 2 different sightings of the Pel's on the this 3 night/4 day hike along the Olifants River.
