Did a sunset drive tonight in the rain. Still reasonable sightings.....starting with a leopard in tree near the BnD turning. It had been there most of the day too! Gone when we came back later, predictably! Also had impalas, crocs (a couple of biggies at Matjulu bridge), rhnos, hyena, genet, 2 spotted eagle owls, zebras, scrub hares, duiker.

Rain has stopped at the moment.

Should be around at the start of your trip - going to Letaba (hopefully) 13th.

Thanks!

Been in Skuks since Thursday, but no time to get outside camp. Heard hyenas around, and lots of bird life.

Course has gone well, and just this morning to complete now. Not easy doing some lecturing with wonky eyesight, but I managed. Harder still using the computer....but only a few more days and all should start to improve again.

Back at my friends' home after first surgery - which went well. Feeling fine, but understand why I am not allowed to drive straight away! Was able to go to the doctor's rooms on the way home and get my right eye measured so have been able to put my contact lens back in - so am not blind - huge relief! Probably means the right eye will be done next Monday now - he will confirm when I go to see him on Wednesday for a check-up.

I was so hungry when I came out of surgery that the cheese sandwich and tea they gave me was the best I have tasted for many a year!!!!

Update...... left eye doing well. Not quite right yet, but getting there. The right eye will be done next Wednesday now. Came back to caravan on Tuesday, and drove myself to appointment on Wednesday - independent to the last!!! Have had no pain at all, and no real discomfort either - more a bit of bruising from the local anaesthetic.

Noisy elephant at the fence!!!!! Heard breaking branches rumblings, but just had some squealing too......

Withdrawal symptoms were definitely kicking in so when I was asked to do a sunset drive tonight I agreed. Glad I did - it was a good trip..... Within 40mins I had had rhinos galumphing about, 2 lionesses rolling around under a bush, an ellie crossing the road in front of us, a leopard in a tree, and 6 dugha boys! And a few giraffes and impalas by then too...... We ended up with more giraffes and impalas, Thandamamba in heavy musth but still very relaxed next to the vehicle, lots more rhinos, another couple of ellies close, large spotted genet, duikers, spotted eagle owl, scrub hares....... And on my way home I found a small side-striped jackal harassing the last ellie we had seen near BnD by nipping at its feet. Not sure what that was about at all......!

My eye held up well.....and seems to be settling down at last.

Tonight I had the privilege of introducing 7 people to Kruger for the first time. It was quieter than last night, but still good. The lions refused to appear, the leopard was a distant blob in a tree, but otherwise the rhinos, ellies and buffaloes (twice) were more obliging. Also had giraffes, impala and scrub hares, waterbuck (small herd which actually decided to come and see what we were), duiker, hyenas, steenbok, juvenile martial eagle, bateleur, hippos, crocs, bushbabies, and a chameleon.

Had an exciting moment when the matriarch of the breeding herd of ellies decided we had outstayed our welcome......but she only turned, walked a few steps towards us, and shook her head. I started the vehicle and we moved off and she went back to feeding.

And I forgot to add a pair of ground hornbills! Later in the drive I wanted to show them a community spider nest.....but they switched the lights off and refused to look.....total arachnophobes!!!!!

Raymond had called and asked me to do a night drive tonight, but then called and said the guests had cancelled so I was not needed after all. Did a camp check instead and found folk who had been here 3 extra nights........!

Left guests but noted all details and will ensure they report to tihe office in the morning. Sent email to both managers too

Have not tackled the fridge......too difficult on my own. It will be too heavy for me to manage when it is loose.

I'll make a plan! Might have to work out something to support it when I get it loose.....And I think it is going to be a tight fit getting out the door too.

All done and dusted now. The doc was really pleased with my eyes and in fact could scarcely wait to start the check-up on Friday morning! I can see quite well, and it will get better he tells me. Wonderful!!!!!

The 3 nights at Letaba went very quickly! Enjoyed the river view and had ellie bull almost constantly there, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, giraffe and lots of birds too. Did not do much driving about, and rather relaxed. Had a mini-meet with Chirinda, Val and Dungie which was great!

The trip home yesterday was not the leisurely drive I had planned for various reasons, but was full of sightings including a couple of cat jams, ellies, rhinos, buffs (a couple of huge herds), giraffes, warthogs, impalas, zebs, wildebeest.....

Had a problem with car starting after getting back which turned out to be a burnt out solenoid, but got it fixed fortunately. It threw out my plans though, so was late to bed and now up early ready for my 4 nights in the bush. Won't be on the forum as no electricity and probably no signal until later Wednesday......

Oh and had waterbuck at the fence here yesterday evening, and ellies around - still hear some rumblings now.

And now back at Skukuza......

Drove in convoy with another guide to Skukuza from Malelane, and as I got here he saw oil begin to pour from under my vehicle....... A bit of investigation and we found the work on the starter motor the night before had weakened a pipe near by which had given way eventually as I got to Skuks.

It threw our plans out....and we hitched the trailer to the other vehicle, transferred stuff from my car and left it parked safely to be sorted out when we got back, and went to meet 2 more guys and shoe-horn them and their stuff into the vehicle and trailer too! We did it.....and then drove to the agreed meeting place for the other guys. A little redistribution ensured a bit more comfort on the ride to the camping area as we had 3 vehicles then.

And what an area we were given! Away from any tourist road, with a windmill and reservoir and water trough on the banks of a seasonal river. We arrived to find a large herd of ellies drinking at the reservoir and a rhino at the water trough and had to sit and wait for them to leave. They eventually did.....straight towards us! They ambled happily past the cars, and off towards the river bed. Wow!!!

Then it was time to choose the camping spots.....
