Your photos, your copyright?

Unread postby DuQues » Tue Apr 13, 2010 12:36 pm

There was a question about usage of photos entered into competitions.
Some competitions want to use them for things which you do not want, or even imply they could sell your photos to stock agencies.

So here is a separate topic for it.

However, before you dive in, have a good read here, and use Google to look around at what else is available.
Not posting much here anymore, but the photo's you can follow here There is plenty there.

Feel free to use any of these additional letters to correct the spelling of words found in the above post: a-e-t-n-d-i-o-s-m-l-u-y-h-c

I am an amateur photographer and I have thousands of photos. Some of them are really special to me and though I want to use it in my Trip Reports, I don't want "others" to use it for things not intended.

Question: How do I indicate copyright on my photo's? :hmz: :hmz:

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure and hopefully someone else will help out with specifics but you should be able to do it in Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom.

Other things to look into is to embed the copyright in your EXIF, again you should be able to do this in Photoshop. And never, ever load the original size on to any photo hosting site. Always resize to reduce quality. The result will be good enough for web use but bad enough for anyone wanting to steal it to resell.

Thanks for the link, DuQues.:thumbs_up::thumbs_up:
I will read it when I'm back from my trip.

You can use photoshop, light room or other speciale programs to do that.

I use photoshop to create a border and copyright symbol in the photo.
It's a photoshop action and works automatically.
If you don't want a border, but only a copyright, than it's can be easily done with lightroom. It has his own watermark option. If you export your photo, than you just enable it and he export the photos with your watermark.
If you find photoshop to difficult or don't have photoshop or lightroom, than there also a lot of watermark programs available.

I also use picasa to add a copyright to my photos. I do this when I 'export' them (resizing and saving into a separate folder) before uploading them on internet.

To get the copyright symbol - on a PC it is : [ALT] + 0169 .... on a notebook, you can only type the numbers on the keypad, so use the function key to type the numbers on the keypad.
