Swallow: Greater Striped

Greater Striped Swallow

Habitat: Open country, especially grassy highveld, also gasslands to sea level, avoids dense woodland and forest.
Habits: Solitary or in pairs when breeding; in family groups towards end of the breeding season; in flocks of 30 or more birds after breeding, often in company with other swallows and swifts.
Flight relatively slow and leisurely with much gliding between wingbeats.
Forages over open grassveld and water (rarely on ground).
Food: Aerial arthropods; arils of Acacia cyclops seeds.
Voice: Chuckling phrase of 2-3 introductory short notes followed by gargled trill, trip trip trirrr, uttered perched or flying, with head thrown back and throat puffed out.

We saw them at Augrabies last month, they were busy collecting the mud which has formed from the incredible spray from the falls.
Unfortunately we could not get a pic as they moved so fast and didn't sit still for very long at all.
