Addo Mobile Cam

Unread post by PJL » Wed Jan 25, 2012 5:18 pm

Hello everyone! :yaya:

I'm heading out to SA on Friday (Jan 27th) to visit family for a few weeks  ... and a trip wouldn't be complete without visiting Addo - can't wait :D

:cam:
As a few of you who have been involved in the project mobile webcam thread may have read, I had a thought about using a mobile phone as a mobile webcam in the parks. It just relies on a fairly decent signal, so I'm hoping to try the idea out when we visit Addo... which would mean you can follow along on our game drives and see what we're seeing at 30 second or 1 minute intervals! Wouldn't that be nice seeing as we're down by 2 cams at the mo... 8)

I think I better point out at this point that it might not work at all
  • My phone will need a South African sim card + data bundle (anyone got any good suggestions on deals at the mo?)... which relies on my phone being unlocked to all networks. I think it is already, but will hopefully confirm that tonight by borrowing a few friend's sims.
  • I'll also need to figure out how to get the data connection working on a new network quite quickly as we head to Addo on Monday after arriving on Saturday afternoon in PE.
  • And of course, if the data signal isn't strong enough in some sections of the park then it'll go offline as well.

Assuming none of the above is an issue, you can follow our game drives from this site:
http://www.leylandfamily.com/webcam.aspx

We'll be heading to Addo on Monday 30th Jan, and will be leaving the park sometime on Wednesday 1st Feb. Not sure what times we'll be out driving, but obviously sometime between 6am and 6pm CAT due to park opening hours.

So... who's up for a safari with me?

PJL :yaya:

What a lovely and thoughtful idea!

I'll definitely watch your progress and hope you'll get the technology side
sorted. That would be just awesome!

Talking about mobile webcam... We still got that project still going...
Maybe we should take the chance to do some more fundraising -
after all you are about to provide a mobile webcam.

So I'll chip in 100 Rand for the mobile webcam project,
if you get your phone going!

Any other takers?

Hi PJL,

Superb idea!!

I know from the Mobile Webcam Project that you have been thinking of the idea before…..now is the time to make a test drive.

You should look at the coverage maps of the Main providers look here: MTN Vodacom Cell C Virgin
8ta and the amount of free data(unlimited data) and make the best choice…

I would like to hear which provider you have chosen and how it has worked when you return.

I will definitely follow your cam if I have the opportunity….. :D

Have a great Holiday and Enjoy!!! 8)

Hi PJL,

Great idea.

There are sections in the Park where the reception is poor or no signal, and there are sections where the reception is very good. What this means is that you will have broken service as you are moving along. Maybe you can record where there is no signal and send your recording out when you have good service.
My suggestion is that you use one of the bigger service providers like Vodacom or MTM

Wishing you all of the best.

I'm in the UK and have a phone on Orange. I tested it last night with other sim cards and it seemed to be fine!
arks wrote:The data papckage that I got last September and October cost R59 for a whole month of unlimited data, which I thought was an excellent deal

My family are organising a vodacom payg sim... that deal must have been a one-off I think... but I can get a 200Mb data bundle for a sensible price so that's what we're going for :D

Thanks

Hey LS!

Yes let's use it to try and promote the mobile webcam idea! I've sent you a PM about the details

I guessed the coverage will vary quite a bit. I'll check how much space I have on my phone to see whether I can save the images and post them later... might not be possible.

We head off today... arrive tomorrow afternoon, and I should be able to let you all know sometime on Sunday whether it looks like the whole idea is going to work or not.

Bye for now

And it works in SA as well! Woohoo!

So tomorrow I'm hoping to test out how best to have it mounted in the car... would be nice to avoid blurry pics, but needs to be accessible in case a quick sighting comes up!

Addo Mobile should be up and running on Monday... haven't got exact times planned yet, but will keep you all posted
