bosticbudgie-KTP Kids in Parks – April 2011

Unread post by bosticbudgie » Fri May 13, 2011 5:39 pm

I’ve been living vicariously through other people’s TR’s for a couple of years now and I thought that it’s about high time that I return the favor. I love taking photos, but I don’t think I’m very good at it and it's also the first time that I'll be doing a trip report, so please bear with me…

Our trip planning started when KG asked for volunteers for the Kids in Parks program and we thought while we were there, to add on a few days. We were very lucky to get permission from the park manager to stay at the group facilities at Gemsbokplein on our off days from the KIP program and we also managed to book 4 nights at Nossob after the program ended. So all was set for our two week trip to my favorite place in the world!!
Day 1, Sunday, 10 April 2011
We arrived at Twee Rivieren and met up with Henriëtte Ferreira (the People and Conservation officer of KTP) who was going to escort us to Gemsbokplein. I realized that it was definitely not going to be a leisurely drive there because Henriëtte had lots of things to still do before the first group arrived on Monday. So off we set at the speed limit (first time in my life driving at the speed limit in a park and I was constantly wondering what I was missing….). After the grassy dune road, we hit the Auob and I couldn’t believe my eyes! The place had been transformed since we left the park in December 2010 after many rainstorms! When we reached Houmoed, there was a traffic jam and I thought it must be the pride of lions that we find at that waterhole on almost every visit. Boy, was I wrong!
I took exactly 2 pics and we had to go. I still have nightmares about leaving those 4 cheetahs right next to the road… but I could feel it in my bones, this was going to be an amazing trip. After pitching our tent at Gemsbokplein, we went for an afternoon drive, but because it was still so hot, we only saw general game and a couple of raptors (we’re only just getting into bird watching, so please help with the ID’s!)
We drove back to our home at Gemsbokplein and we really looked forward to being completely alone that night, no people, no power (we decided to not switch on the generator), no noise….
