Credit for bookings not completed due to emergencies


Has anybody ever had to ask for credit given when you had to leave a park before your due time because of a death in the family or something similar? We had to leave Kgalagadi early due to a familymatter in June 2010 and was told that we would receive a credit so that we can book again. To date, September 2010, there is nothing on our account yet.

Suggest you follow up with head office regarding the credit.

amending reservations online

Hi there,

We booked some accomodation a while back however the choice was limited. Better bungalows have now come up and we would like to amend our online booking online if possibe. The only option appears to be cancel. Last year we were able to do it but the system is now different. I have been advised to email reservations by other mites but it says you can amend online. What am I missing :redface:

Maddie,

Would love to share some pearls of wisdom, but I have the same problem. If you cancel it online, you might lose out entirely! Will watch this thread to see what can be done!

When we have needed to amend something we usually just go to the Park offices. I don't know where you stay but the offices at Cresta in Johannesburg are great. The staff are fantastic and can sort out everything while you are there. Like i said though not sure where you are. You can try phoning them as well.

Hi,
I have tried to book for next August Shimuwini, Shingwedzi and Letaba. I emailed requests via the reservations page after checking availability. I received a reply saying I had to check availability direct with Shimuwini (something I didn't do this year when we booked there)? Also it said I would have to check with Shingwedzi camp direct to ask about getting bungalows next to each other - is this usually the case? My request for Letaba was not mentioned so I don't know if it is being processed or what? I emailed again and basically asked the above questions and also for a fax number for the camps (if I ring no-one understands my Aussie accent). I got a one line answer: 'I only have the phone numbers.....'
I am really non-plussed as the booking process went so well last time. What do you knowledgeable people suggest I do now?

Just book online. It's easy and I've never had any problems with it. And the computer won't get confused about your Aussie accent :lol:

Yep, just book online.

When you have your reservation number you can easily request the bungalows to be next to each other and such.
Usually the real assigment of the bungalows is done about a week beforehand, so you can then also call the camp with your wishes.

Good morning,

It is my understanding that Central Reservations book units, that is eg, a BD2 in a particular camp. The actual allocation of accommodation is done at the camp itself, all kinds of situations arise at the camp on a day by day basis that are not known by Central Reservations, that is why if you request a particular hut number, one has to call the camp directly.

The Central Reservations system cannot allocate a particular hut number etc.

I have always found the camps to be most helpful and accommodating when you phone them.

As the Nike swoosh says - " Just Do It " and enjoy the experience.

I have just booked my reservations for next Feb and next May, I don't book with the "on line" system but the old "submit a booking form" via e-mail system and must say was most impressed, in every case I received my confirmation within 2 hours of sending it in and one can't ask for quicker than that.
There were a few incidences where I had to make small changes and that was also sent and received back in the same time frame.

I don't worry about reserving specific #'s now, but do all that directly with the camp +- 2 weeks prior to our arrival and to date have been lucky enough to get the requested chalet every time.

Can you cancel/change camp reservations without penalty? This question came up on another web travel forum and the answer seems to be if you made reservation online you are stuck with it.

Strange? I did some looking around the SANP web site. Found this –

page 1 of latter says-
“The following conditions are only relevant to public reservations and not those
made directly on the web via the online real time booking system (Refer to
attached documentation).”
Firstly, "public reservations" are what, how?? Then follows cancellation penalties for various cancellation times, e.g. 30 to 15 days before arrival 25%.

Here is (I think) the “attached documentation” referred to above regarding online booking
Page 4 says-
“Cancellations of reservations have to be processed directly with SANParks reservations. Note that the cancellation of a reservation made online will result in a full forfeiture of all payments made for that reservation.”

So, way I understand this is that if you make your reservations using SANP online system you are stuck with it. But if you make your reservation using the telephone call in system (public reservations?) then you can cancel and make changes receiving refunds. Huh? Did I get this correct? When businesses (airlines) are forcing us to use the internet, SA is discouraging its use?

Please, confirm, correct or clarify this for me. We are going to Kruger (for fourth time) in 2011 (from USA).

Hi Tom... :D welcome :yaya:

I believe that you are indeed correct...I think the logic behind this is to stop Tour Operators from booking the entire park just in case they can sell it.
I could be mistaken and I'm sure that if that is the case another mite will know more.

I'm very jealous of your upcoming trip.... :mrgreen:

Hi Tom,

Essentially you are correct. On the page where you have to indicate that you "I understand and agree with these conditions" it says:
# Note that any downgrading of a reservation made online will result in a forfeiture of reservation payments made that is equal to the difference in value of the reservation before and after you changed your booking.
# Note that the cancellation of a reservation made online will result in a full forfeiture of all payments made for that reservation.
# Note that modification and cancellation charges may be levied on any reservations amended or cancelled online, irrespective of the channel through which the reservations were originally made, subject to SANParks' conditions for the acceptance of reservations.

As an international traveler though you are not really hampered by this (provided that you don't book guesthouses all over the place).
You have set days that you will be in South Africa. So book a nice menu of camps.
If you do get a change of mind, changing your route, you can change your menu. It can be done online, but you can also do it via mail or phone.
If your booking ends up cheaper than initially, well, a pity, you lost a bit of money (guesthouses reference). If it ends up slightly more expensive you'll be charged for the extra.

Now there can be larger issues in your private life, and you can not make the days. :?
Well, do not cancel!
Mail them, and reschedule your visit. I'm not certain about the timeperiod used, but you seem to be able to move your reservations around half a year. At no extra cost if you schedule the same.

You say SANP will credit me towards new/future use? Then the best SANP can do for me is a future credit? And future must be within half year :( ? Else I loose all $$$? BUT (being international visitor) what if I'm not sure when or if I can return to SANP? They don't understand/encourage international visitors. Since SANP is charging me a premium park visitation fee (international), it would be nice if they could do a bit more for me on reservation flexibility :)
Not so good, I'll stick with phone call in for reservations.
