Stakeholder meeting and Survey - Kruger Self-Drive Day Visitors

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KNPTraffic_CB

Dear Sir/Madam,

Your opinion as a self-drive day visitor to the Kruger National Park is extremely important to and can help us manage the Park more effectively.

SANParks would like to invite you to participate in a discussion which will aim to find solutions to the traffic congestion experienced on certain days in the South of Kruger (most notably public holidays and school holidays).

Details of the sessions and how to RSVP can be found by clicking on this link: KNP Traffic Management Study –self-drive day visitors.

Please RSVP on or before the 2nd of November 2017.

If you are not able to attend any of the sessions, but would like to have an opportunity to contribute your thoughts on the proposed solutions, you may also do so by participating in an online questionnaire – kindly indicate your preference in the link provided above.

For any project related queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Liandi Slabbert

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT STUDY

The Kruger National Park, (KNP) as a wildlife watching destination, has become increasingly popular with local and international visitors. Whilst the mandate of SANParks is to conserve biodiversity, the rise in visitor numbers has created challenges which need to be addressed.

One of these challenges is the increased traffic congestion in the South of the Park experienced on certain days of the year (most notably on public holidays, long weekends and school holidays), particularly at the entrance gates and at wildlife sightings.

SANParks has partnered with the University of Queensland in Australia to investigate potential solutions for a range of traffic-related problems in Kruger. As part of the research process, SANParks will engage in open discussions with various stakeholders of the Park.

Together with the researchers, the Park has identified 9 different stakeholder groups from which we will gather ideas and suggestions for solutions.

These include: Camping overnight visitors; Non-camping overnight visitors; Tour operators; Self-drive day visitors; Managers of large tourist accommodation establishments in close vicinity of the Park who host guests that enter KNP as day visitors (either on OSV’s or private vehicles); SANParks Honorary Rangers; OSV guides; Senior staff of the KNP Management team; and relevant Taxi Associations.

Ten focus group discussions will be conducted over a period of two weeks in November. Opinions and suggestions are gathered from each stakeholder group separately. Focus group methodology was chosen as it allows for in-depth discussions and presents the researchers with an opportunity to ask follow up questions. This also encourages researchers to enter the process with an open mind without preconceived ideas. The aim is to come up with a list of potential solutions which represent the views of different stakeholder groups. For this reason, SANParks opted to make use of a third party to increase the objectivity of the study.

A randomly selected sample of overnight and day visitors have been invited by email to participate as we can only accommodate a maximum of 20 per group, however, we have a few seats left and would like to give you an opportunity to RSVP.

The focus group discussions will then be followed up with a quantitative approach (survey) to gain consensus on which solutions are preferred.

The results will be communicated to SANParks Management to guide their decision making in drafting vehicle traffic management interventions.

1)bring down gate quota's
2)If you stop over night visitors to self drive you will end up with empty camps as there will be no incentive to stay in the park, while better accommodation is available outside the park.
3)All day visitors to make use of the OSV,s , this will insure that people stay inside the park to self drive and then be more strict with policing

A big question, why are these Focus groups or public participation events always during the week in working hours? Normal members of the public will have to take leave to attend these events, unlike representatives from OSV companies, tour groups, taxi associations etc who will be sent to these meetings as part of their employment.

Spargish, I agree :) Not totally convinced SANParks is aiming for the input of ordinary Kruger-visiting citizens, based on the following reasons:

1. The times are ordinary working hours, meaning most non-commercial drive parties will experience difficulties to attend.
2. Reaction time for RSVP should be three weeks, IMHO a reasonable time to react to an invitation of such public importance.
3. The session dates are palnned too short after the RSVP dates, meaning the sessions are planned within a few weeks after the RSVP dates. Most business plan 2-4 weeks ahead, so I would say it would be ideal if the sessions take place say 6-8 weeks after the RSVP dates, allowing ample time for considerate planning as I for example only heared about this three days ago, and the first session is already in three weeks time. If I were to ask leave to attend for a session like this, I would hardly get leave from my boss on such short notice
4. The manner this was communicated has no check-or-balances and are not transparent. This could be improved by informing ALL SANParks stakeholder to enlist themselves via e-mail in order for them to have a chance to be selected. Thereafter the names can be drawn publicly, this procedure seems rather easy. The "selection by computer" provides no safeguard to the public that the selection is non-arbitrary and fair and it's easy to act in bad faith (not saying SANParks did, but it's all abou perception). If SANParks wish to gain the trust of the ordinary stakeholder, they should do more to ensure a transparent election method!

Not saying the time limits and planning is definately unreasonable, but neither am I convinced SANParks takes into consideration the factors I have just mentioined. They should perhaps do so in future, as all businesses and employers work with a tight planning a few weeks ahead, meaning three to four weeks is too short.

But like it's said in the Pearl Harbour movie..."that's just me"

Whilst it is under discussion about the days, times and venues (which are also not acceptable to me) I want to know if we can make use of this blog to share our experiences and observations to assist attendees to these discussion sessions?

I am sure the general public can make a huge contribution to eleviate current difficulties with traffic in the Kruger Park and be able to assist determining the causes and frustrations self driving tourists are experiencing.

I received an invitation and completed the questionnaire. I made an attempt to save all questions, however something went wrong therefore I have a limited number of questions per page, but nevertheless captured most questions. I would suggest, pick a question that you want to discuss and let's dicuss it on this forum, after all the forum is where the public should be able to discuss this topic and these points

These are samples of most the questions the stakeholders can express their opinion. I believe a general discussion about these questions might add some valuable solutions to future traffic congestions
