Bouquets for Central Booking

What a fab experience this on line booking is, I booked last night for 25 people, for 3 different time periods in 3 different types of accomodation and it was a breeze.

Our family is holding a get together in June next year and, after having the "date" debate for months I was not looking forward to making the booking (because of course, not one of the 7 families wants to stay the same amount of time) but Hester Van Den Berg made it so simple.

I mailed last night to central reservations and before 11am this morning I had a response on the phone from Hester.

O no cj001, are you phoning from Nelspruit all the way to CT! :shock:
There is a number you can dial in Nelspruit that will give you the same service.

Hi Molpol40, you can checkavailability and complete online booking forms for each camp which is very useful.

I do many transactions with my credit card on line and have never had a problem. It is easier for people to steel your info when they have the card, say at a gas station or any store for that matter.

SANParks has a form specifically for CC payments that they will email to you. It's a Word file and you can fill in all your details, save it, and email the filled in form back to them. Easy and safe, have done it several times with no problems. And you get the final confirmation form (the one that you need to take with you) for your booking by return email, so you know all is well.

I always use this method to pay my bookings with Sanparks and have never had any problems with it as yet.
Must just say that it is from SA and not overseas fax, but still its been without any hassles.

But it will probably be better doing it the way Arks does with the Word doc and just mailing that back to the person helping you with your booking.

Can I ask the regulars about changing reservations?
For example, we put in a request for 3 nights at Olifants perimeter view and got back 2 nights Olifants (no view) and 1 night Orpen. This is for August 2006. I completely understand that this is what is available now, and better to book something than nothing ... but is it likely that in the next 4 months someone might not confirm a provisional booking and exactly what we wanted comes free? If I keep checking the website and see something come free on the availability chart could I put in a new request even after I've paid the deposit and/or full amount? Is it best to phone central reservations directly to make changes?

August is a long time away. Keep trying. Changes happen all the time, if you are not in there, you will not succeed.
I have also found that personal contact helps. If you try to make contact with the same person, they know what you are looking for and will be on the look out.
My own experience from central reservation has been very positive.

Hi Daj, as MM suggests, keep trying, I tend to email until close to the date we travel out, then try to phone, it suprising how often you are able to alter the booking to your first choice. Even checking when you arrive at the camp, if you haven't manage to alter the booking before hand can occasionally come up trumps. Have a great trip.

Hi again
Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get a reply once you've submitted an online booking request? I got an answer to my first request in a couple of days and did an additional request for another camp over 8 days ago and am wondering if I should have heard by now, but with the Easter holidays and all maybe I'm being too impatient. I don't want to nag the reservations office if this is usual!

Hi graemy,
The confirmation letter is all you need. I never received a receipt or voucher.
Just show the staff at the reception or gate the confirmation letter when you check in/enter the park and have your ID and Wildcard (if you have one) ready.

If there is, I can't find it. I think you will have to call, fax or email reservations, Lionhugger.

The two are Shipandane and Sable Dam. More info on the Sleepover Hides here

Olifants Camp

Please can anyone explain to me why it is so difficult, if not virtually impossible, to be able to make an online booking for one of the best river-view bungalows at Olifants camp. I refer specifically to those numbered 1 - 11.

When we were still living in South Africa it was becoming increasingly more difficult to be able to get one of those bungalows. Even trips to Pretoria in person became fruitless. I began to get the impression that perhaps they were being held back for overseas visitors.

Now, however, I AM an overseas visitor and I still can't manage to book one of those bungalows in spite of wanting to book about a year in advance of my visit.

I find it both puzzling and frustrating.

Just remember that when only 11 units like this is available and 100 calls/emails/faxes are received for these units within the first 30 minutes of bookings opening one should realise that only the first 11 calls/emails/faxes attended too will get allocated the units for a specific time period. So if you are No 15 in the queue requesting a unit for period A to B your luck will sadly be out. And the first 100 calls (even less) may also theoretically book out the units for a whole month, leaving everyone else wanting.

I was fortunate enough that my booking agent could get me one of the Best River View units in Olifants towards the end of September 2007. The very next request handled by them was out of luck not only for Olifants but for every other camp they wanted to visit during their specified time period as most camps were full or the accomodation as “best availibility”. Now if even a booking agency battles to get accomodation for their clients I am starting to doubt our (me included) argument that the agencies make block bookings in advance.
