Thank you very much to you all for the advice. It is not really the cost of getting it just knowing to have it to avoid all the aggro as some of you experienced with the traffic cops! I will pop in to the central London post office to get one today. Thanks again.

I noticed on the car hire sites this year they nearly all mention the need for IDL although what they mean I assume is IDP.
In UK only a few Post Offices sell these if you can face Post Office queues AND applicants need to be there in person... But AA and RAC do whole thing by post for about £8 per person, you can down load the forms. Holiday Autos phoned Europecar in JBurg for me and they said we'd need IDP if stopped by police or traffic police. so for the first time since photo cards came out we are getting these IDPs. You can apply 3 months before you want it to start, they last a year... or if you are close to your holiday you can pay extra to be fast tracked.
I have forms filled in ready to send off as we are not in Kruger until August.

I believe the criterion is that your driver's permit be in English.
I am a regular visitor to South Africa & never has my Canadian Driver's Permit been questioned by the car rental agencies.
I have been stopped several times for traffic violations & produced my permit without challenge as to it's validity. With most countries now having the carrier's picture on the permit, it is less likely to be refused.
Many years ago when we used to visit Europe, we were advised to get an IDL. I was never asked to produce it at any rental agency. Back then we didn't have our pictures on our permit.

I have also never been asked for an IDP.
The rental agencies have always been ok with my UK drivers licence.

And last December I was also pulled over for a traffic violation
And the officer was quite ok with my UK licence.
