Hi LionWhisperer

The Yellow Ribbon is a way of identifying other Forumites when visiting a Sanpark. It is tied onto the arm of the driver side rearview mirror and can be made of virtually anything - we use a bright yellow plastic bag which we cut ribbons from. We enjoy stopping other YRs or being stopped and sharing our experiences.

Here is a pic showing our YR

Why is this topic restricted to KNP? :hmz:

We flew our YR in KTP in March and had the pleasure to meet

p@m and SO
Asterix and Obelix
Tony T and MT Nest as well as
Lourens

because of that.
Summer 2014 - Oz! It was awesome!

Got mine all ready for our visit in Maroela Camp for September 20th, 21st & 22nd.
One for the outside mirror, one for the front of the Landy's roof rack and my wife has made a great yellow hat band. She says it's to hide the sweat stains. The old hat is just one of those items I refuse to throw away, it's been to too many amazing places over the years.

You are officially now qualified! The day you signed up for this crazy forum, you were entitled to fly your yellow ribbon with pride in any and all SANParks. You will find all sorts of friendly people, also with yellow ribbons on their wing mirrors, stopping to chat to chat to you

Hi Guys,

This may have already been answered, but I think that a refresher for us newbies is required.

I returned yesterday from KNP and in 7 days found 5 yellow ribbons, but only got to speak to H. Kristal and his wife as we were at the same sighting.

The ribbons spotted:
2 x passenger side mirror
1 x driver side mirror
1 x aerial
1 x front bumper

Where is the correct place to fly ones yellow ribbon?

They are hard enough to spot as it is

The driver's side mirror is the correct place, but an extra one on the aerial and one on the passenger side won't come amiss!
Chappie and Hugh and myself are working on a new more seeable concept! Watch this space!

I find a fluttering ribbon somewhat distracting while I am driving , but also sometimes making an irritating noise , therefore I now use a yellow tube slipped over the aerial , which is quite visible . It is made it from plastic irrigation tubing 15 mm diameter , around which I wrapped bright yellow duct tape . In addition , I also tape yellow duct tape around the driver mirror stem .
Last time in KNP ( May 2010 ) , was asked about it by 4 people , 2 of which were forumites ( both of whom did not display YR's ) .
I will display it again in two week's time

okie wrote:Actually , in nautical signals , a yellow flag denotes the letter Q , and if a ship flies this flag by itself , then it means that the ship is free of disease . If the yellow flag is flown with another flag , then it means that there is disease/fever ( especially yellow fever ) on board the ship , and is a signal to " stay clear ".

What about the poor forumites/stiffnecks with red an yellow ribbons?????

The ribbon can be trimmed to the correct length to avoid flapping on the car.

I'm a newbie as well, but I'm reliably informed that it doesn't need to be a ribbon if you don't have one. Anything yellow and visible and that can be safely attached to the driver's wing mirror!!
Enjoy!!!

Flew mine for a couple of days in Kgalagadi but didn't see any others and felt a bit of a twit - someone asked if I'd won an award for something! Took it off after that, but will fly it again in Kruger Nov/Dec. Always meet people there. I have to tie it to the rear door handle as my 'driver' :) won't have it flapping on the wing mirror!

Hi FC,
You can buy a yellow ribbon at most material shops and even at shops that sell hair accessories.
Remember to PM Jazil or Boorgatspook to add your name to the list of people visisting the park on certain dates.

On my last trip I exchanged my yellow ribbon for a big bold yellow scarf, nobody could miss it :D and I was fortunate to meet up with 5 other YRs
