Butterfly: Natal acraea

Unread post by Jakkalsbessie » Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:52 am

Acraea natalica
Natal acraea (Eng) Natal-rooitjie (Afr)
(seen in Mapungubwe)

Image

Just for those interested the flower is Acrotome inflata (very close to Leucas and often confused with Leucas martinicensis. But in Leucas the upper lip of the flower is usually longer than the lower lip and the stamens are protruding from the corolla tube)
You can see an example of L. martinicensis on the Topaz babul blue photo...
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Help indentify Butterflies

Unread post by Scorpion » Sun Feb 22, 2009 12:05 pm

Hi, SO took these pictures in KNP, earlier this week. We've been through all the butterflies on this site and can't seem to match any to this one:

Yes, it is a Natal Acraea (Acraea natalica). They can vary quite a bit so don't be fooled by bright colours and single spots, etc. The upperside is normally better for identification when it comes to this group (the Acraeas).
