Noordkaap road to Malelane condition

Unread postby Sharpy » Sun Jan 24, 2016 7:02 pm

Hi all, could any one please give me some up to date information on the road from Barbeton to Malelane via Noordkaap.
Looking forward to joining the Big bird day at Shingwetzi.
Considering coming from Durban thru Swaziland but worried about transporting food? Any advice.
Regards, Sharpy.

Phalaborwa town tips?

Unread postby jeroenvm » Mon Feb 01, 2016 9:56 am

Halfway though our Kruger trip we intend to leave the park at Phalaborwa to stop up for stocks and quickly contact the world.
Can someone recommend a large supermarket and a cafe or restaurant with wifi, not too far from the gate?
Next Kruger trip: February 2016

Hi jeroenvm

There is a Woolworths food store in Phalaborwa, and a nice Pick n Pay that we shopped at a few weeks ago. There is a new mall that houses the Pick n Pay, Woolworths is in center of town. You will find it on google maps.

I am sure you will find a cafe that will have wifi - we carry a portable 3G modem with us for our data connection. If you decide to get one, Vodacom has the best coverage in the park.

Has anybody driven the R81 via Giyani towards Punda gate in recent times? If so, was the road in okay condition for towing a caravan?

minettest if you guys sleep over in Waterval Boven I would suggest entering the park at Phabeni Gate
Bonus is you'll be in the park earlier
Take the S1 to Skukuza, then take the H1-2 and S36. Prepare a 'skottel braai' breakfast at Nhlanguleni.
Travel straight up past Muzandzene, or take the S145, and take the H7 Tar Road back to Orpen for Check-in at 14:00

Thanks RemiE I did not even know about the Phabeni gate. Had to grab my Kruger map to see where it is. Defnitlity think its a great idea entering there. Would we then take the N4 to Nelspruit and then R40 to hazyview or do we take the R36 to lydenbrg en then to sabie and then hazyview?

minettest, we normally leave Gauteng around 04:30 and travel directly to Phabeni Gate.
We travel at the legal speed limit and normally enter the park around 08:00.
You're correct, you travel to Nelspruit, take the N40 past Witrivier and into Hazyview.
By the Blue Haze Mall turn right onto the R536, Portia Shabangu Drive and travel all the way till you get the KNP Phabeni Gate turn off.
(If by what ever means you've missed the turnoff the R536 becomes the H11 at Paul Kruger Gate)
