kahtrav, I have not been very bothered by mozzies in May. I have however been bitten quite badly by little pepper ticks. (I have been on a couple of hikes in May.) Insect repellent is highly recommended. Sand fleas can also be an issue in some camps.

Mathekenyane, is one of the loveliest look outs. It means 'place of the sand flea' and it deserves the name. If you are going to get out to admire the view, wear something to repel the little devils.

Kahtrav, definitely include the mossie repellent anyway. It does not take up much space and better safe than sorry!

We'll have repellent for sure - just didn't know how extreme we need to be with treated clothes, etc. We'll have those, too. Just kind wondering how pervasive the bugs are at that time of year (early May) in Kruger. Thanks

kahtav, the bugs are not that busy. It is really a very pleasant time of the year.

Hi Kahtrav
We usually travel to the Kruger in May and have found the bugs not a problem in May. We always just as dusk approaches cover arms and legs or spray with peaceful sleep (available in most shops) We also use tea tree shower and shampoo low scented antiperspirant and never wear perfume or aftershave. This has worked for us for many years throughout the tropical parts of the world, so when we started to travel to the Kruger we adopted the same. We also while having our evening meal put the fan on in the room and give the room a spray with Tabard Repellent (also available in the shops).

I hope you have a fantastic time.
