Hi Chirinda,

I am considering your route to tamboti as we are stopping over at Milly's on the N4 and setting off in the morning from there.

Are there any good supermarkets to stock up on that route or would we need to head into hoedspruit?

Many thanks

John

Hi. Off to KNP on Sunday. First stop will be Orpen (Maroele).

Will be driving in from Pretoria. So do I go N4 to Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad and Orpen.

Or do I go N4 to Nelspruit, R40 to Hazyview, Bushbuckridge to Orpen. Never been further than Hazyview and have read about issues in Bushbuckridge.

Thanks

Hello!

This is the best in my opinion... a bit shorter and way nicer landscape.

If it can be useful, I drove through Acornhoek (which is part of Bushbuckridge) to reach the Gowrie Gate (Sabi Sands) one year ago, and actually found the road to be OK. It passes through various villages but no problem at all except for some potholes here and there (not on the R40, anyhow).

Cheers,
Michele.

Johannesburg to Phalaborwa - how long?

Unread post by Horrace » Wed Jul 06, 2016 6:39 pm

Greetings all. My SO has convinced me to explore the more northern parts of the Kruger, and we seriously considering spending some time at Letaba.

It seems to me theta the quickest way to get there is via Phalaborwa gate. Could anyone please advise me on how long it normally takes to get from JHB to Phalaborwa?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Horrace.

About 5-30 to 6 hrs. Depending on stops. It's just over 500km depending on where you are in Jhb.

Thanx again RobertT - may I ask which route you take. Is it the N1, or do you go a different route..

N1 to Polokwane, then R71 to Haenertsburg / Magoebaskloof. Just outside Haenertsburg,I take split down Magoebaskloof instead of Georges valley. Georges valley also nice, totally different and drier vegetation than Magoebaskloof and a longer more gentle drop. Then Tzaneen, Letsitele, Gravellot ( they trap here quite regular where it slows to 60 Km's), then Phalaborwa.

Hi issi

How many nights do you plan to spend en route? We also drive from CT - and usually stick to the N1 and then N12/N4 to either Malelane or Croc Bridge gates.

We have also taken a more scenic route - CT - Mokala - Golden Gate - south Kruger.

It will depend on when you will get close to Kruger, and how much time you have to get to the camp. I always advocate driving as much as possible IN the park.

We have also done the N1 to Polokwane - Tzaneen - Phala. Road is fine all the way.

Remember for Balule you need to check in at either Satara, or Olipants.

DinkyBird, we always that the road you suggested, but seeing that Balule is our first camp we are sort of stuck. We will be staying in Kroonstad and then we would like to enter the park at Orpen, but is not sure what the roads R40 and the R 531 are like.
So our thought were to stick to the N1 to Pietersburg and then to go in at PHALABORWA? :hmz:
