Thanks chirinda, most appreciated.

I will take the road, if no-one else has got any more comments and will let everyone know when I get back if it was great or a disaster

Hi Guys

Just to let everyone know that the R71 to Phalaborwa is not bad except the last 30 km which has 2 stop and go's, about 20 mins waiting period each.

Thanks for the feedback, chas! The condition of the roads is always changing, so it is nice to have up-to-date feedback.

I will be driving from Joburg (Melville) to Nelspruit and on to Croc Bridge next week, travelling on the N12 and N4. Any stop and go patches or other potential problems that I should know about?

Hi Arks

I drove from Belfast (N1) then via N12 , no problems.

They are working on the road (N1) but no stop and goes.

Arks, based on the latest road report of the AA (yep the car guys not the other uhm AA  ) indicate the following:

N4
WITBANK / MIDDELBURG

Early mornings and late afternoons mist and fog which make visibility very poor. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and to use their headlights and increase following distances.

N4
WONDERFONTEIN / BELFAST

Rehabilitation is in progress and lane closures and delays may be encountered. Expected date of completion is August 2010.

Nothing for the N12, but I suspect it might be the same with regards to fog that could decrease visibility early in the mornings.

Safe travels!

George_Brits - I agree that fog/thick mist can be a problem in the early morning at this time of year on the N4.

We didn't encounter any problems at all when travelling to Malelane gate in early March.

The road works you mention didn't cause any problems - no-one even slowed to the recommended 80 kph!!

Thanks, George and Hippotragus, for the current information, very helpful.

@ George: If AA is saying that the roadworks are to be finished in August 2010 ... well, I suppose it's 'African time'?

Good afternoon

Can any of the Western Cape mites traveling with a caravan give me advice on places to stay over on the way to Malelane gate. My plan is to do a one stop trip (N1/N4) but after Bloemfontein I am not sure if there are any good/safe caravan parks.

Some serious advice needed please. I am booked in at Tamboti on 22nd and normally (well normal for me) I would drive from Pretoria to Malelane leaving 2am, then think nothing of driving through the park to Satara - Orpen - Tamboti. However I am slightly tired at present and need to be sensible (well as sensible as I can be  )
1. Pretoria -to Phalaborwa gate and south to Satara or
2. Pretoria via Phabeni gate (which route please)
3. Pretoria to Orpen (again which route is recommended)
Please remember I travel solo and would need to take a break during daylight hours (brunch?)
My choice would be 2 - Phabeni, but which route and what are the conditions of the road?

Not all who wander are lost (but I do make a habit of it  )

Roadworks have started on the N4, just after Hectorspruit towards Komatipoort, to widen the road.

Expected duration of the roadworks is 18 months, but apparently there will be no stop and goes.

Speed limit is reduced to 60 km, but very few drivers adhere to this. :)

Hi all,
Can someone please tell me how "safe" the route from Thsipise to Pafuri Gate is, at this moment?
I have not travelled this road for some time. Appreciate your input and thanks in advance :D

Johan, unless we get notification in here it will usually be OK but I would check in before you leave and also maybe a call to the local police station or the Pafuri gate just to make sure. 013 735 5574
