Light Aeroplane crash on Voortrekker rd?

Unread post by ndloti » Fri Aug 10, 2012 9:02 am

I have an eyewitness report of an incident which had already occurred by the time it was seen - a light aircraft accident / forced landed on Voortrekker road after Skipberg in the direction of Afsaal .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

Latest on this via an informant - approximately 5km past Skipberg - high wing light aircraft ZS NXC . Appears to be a forced landing - wing hit a small tree , propellor struck ground .

It's long weekend so we will probably only have feedback early next week.

An aeroplane was forced to land on Voortrekker road (yesterday) in the KNP after it ran out of fuel. The pilot was travelling from Mozambique to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). He was travelling alone, and had to be rescued by a tourist who took him to Pretoriuskop Restcamp for safety.

The section ranger at Pretoriuskop had to accommodate and assist him to locate the next of kin. The pilot is fine although still in shock, he was unhurt.
However, the aeroplane is slightly damaged due to an emergency landing.

That was fast Lesego  I think this is a first for Kruger, a plane making an emergency landing in Kruger. My first impression was that how does an experienced pilot run out of fuel, but then, if you are able to do an emergency landing on a twisting and turning road in Kruger without killing yourself, then you must be an ace.

Whatever the reason for him landing , I was under the impression that overflying the KNP was not allowed .

I recall from Custos magazine many years ago that an aeroplane landed on the tar road near Orpen and the pilot who had lost his way was able to taxi to the entrance gate .
