How often do you go to Kruger?

Unread post by Umar_Daya » Sun Sep 25, 2011 10:57 pm

The subject speaks for itself. This could be a fountain of knowledge if we can identify the forumites who are more priveledged. Eg finding out animal seasonal patterns etc. Keeping in contact would be an honour!

We go regularly twice a year, plus another bonus trip any time if I can somehow sneak that past SO!

Our regular trips are in February and May/June every year.

We normally call our Feb. trip, our birding trip and the later one our animal trip, but having said that have had wonderful sightings at either time, including 2 Caracal kittens in the Punda Maria area in Feb in 2010 being one of the highlights. :D

I would like to make a group on bb with all the 'regulars' just because a group has a limiting factor of 30. Do you think this is a good idea? I have Bridgeman the ranger at l.sabie as a contact and I'll try to get others that are based in Kruger. I have such a raw passion for Kruger and this could be a way for me and like minded people to satisfy our thirst for a deeper understanding of the park. The reason I'm using BB as a mode is because its instant and I am in a group already that works fantastically, so I KNOW it will work. One aspect of which is the sightings, which is really useful. What do the rest of you think?

UD, would non bb users be able to belong to the group?

We try and go as often to KNP as we can - and it is never enough. Living a 2000km drive from the park, we make our trips nowadays longer to make the drive worth the while. Last year we spent between 8 - 9 weeks in the park, and it looks like this year it will be about 6 weeks.

Hello Umar, we go once a year ( 2weeks in July), wish we could go at least 4 times a year to cover all the seasons BUT July is wonderful, cold in the evevnings and early mornings and warm during the day. When we are in the park in July we normally stay in one southern camp for at least 2 days and then spend the rest of our holiday in our beloved north.

Often , normally 3 nights at month end with a 2 week stay at year end, Easter etc, plus day trips, now and again.
This year I will be deserting Kruger in December for Kgalagadi , though.

Umar please don't feel bad with what i am about to tell you.

PS: i speak on my behalf and not others.

Honestly speaking once i enter into Kruger i am the spotter and photographer at the back of the Safari Vehicle and i concentrate on sightings and put my guests first and totally forget about the rest of the world accept for my wife and 3 kids.

Honey if you reading this, this is for you Image

Being a BB addict, Kruger is the only time i get to ignore the chit chat over BB.
What i can do is PM u my BB pin and u will receive a list of what we had seen for the day and so on.
But even this happens very rarely when i get time to do it.

I tried it over BB with about 15 friends and everything revolved around me to post sightings. it wasn't long before the group got disintegrated Image

and i am one of very few Safari Companies that don't make use of 2 way radios on-board their safari vehicles. Use of 2 way radios to broadcast sightings results in total havoc at sightings.

The thrill of Kruger is to go and search for the secrets that she has to offer and we make it known to our guests that lions and Leopards means absolutely nothing to us. And believe it or not u will still get to see everything. Allow me to share just one example with you from my last safari. On my last safari we had seen the following:

Please bare in mind that when i say 7 lion i mean 7 different lion sightings.

7 Lion, 5 Leopard including the 5 Leopard in one tree, 3 Cheetah, 2 Wild Dogs, 2 hyena, BB Jackal, Rhino black and white, elephant, buffalo, honey badges many antelope and an array of birds including purple crested turaco and Gymnogene.

well the highlight was supposed to go to the 5 Leopards in one tree.... but.....

these 2 sightings over shadowed the 5 leopards all together..

Genet sleeping in a tree.

I think that the SANPARKS forums work perfectly. I see that this is your 12th posting so far... you'll get the hang of things and this forum is lotssssssssssss of fun. I do understand that you would like it to be much quicker and i agree with you but i don't see BB as an alternative..
please note im not being controversial in any way its just my opinion.

With BB only a hand full of people will enjoy it.
With forum the masses of people have the privalage to enjoy it

Hi Umar, reading the other reactions makes me a little jealous...
When we should live in Mpumalanga, and it was possible, we would be every weekend in Kruger

Living in the Netherlands we can 'only' go twice each year to Kruger. But we stay about 7 weeks in Kruger each year. We just arrived back in Holland yesterday from our last 4 weeks visit in Kruger. And had a great time. 1 of our highlights was a cheetah with a very young kitten south of LS. We saw lots and lots of lions, had 14 leopard sightings!!, 1 wilddog sighting, saw several sables, close to Talamati but also near Satara. We had a beautifull herd of elands near Klopperfontein and a herd of tsessebes and during all our Krugerholidays of the last years, we drove more than 100.000 km through all the park.
Just back, but hope to be back in Kruger as soon as possible.......but first have to work again.....

Howzit (slm)

Unfortunately only twice a year!!!!!! One 4 day boys trip (no wives), and another family trip during the year.

just got back last week from a fabulous trip! Check this cheetah in action taken with my blackberry:

This trip we seen this cheetah in a tree, couple of leapards in trees, and a lion in a tree scavenging a leopards previous kill. Best trip ever. Looking forward to the next one.
