Hippo pools

Unread post by Ladybug 123 » Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:32 am

Can anyone tell me if you can still visit the hippo pools.
I have been going to the hippo pools for years.
My SO is still new to KNP and wanted to show him the pools in December but there was nobody there.
Would like to show him the pools when we will be visiting the park in April?

We visited Hippo Pools last year in June and there was a ranger there (old Lee Enfield and all).

We had a great viewing and were lucky enough to see a failed hunt by a female carrying young who then came straight over to the rock formation afterwards.

As far as I know, you can still go there. Last time I was there, last May, Daniel was there to watch and guide.

Hi there,
we were at the Hippo Pools near to Croc bridge last month and yes the guide is still there.
We got chatting as there were Lions at the cnr. of S25 and the road to the pools.
The guide is there from 6.30 am and knock off at 10.30am so not there all day.
There were two there the day we were there. It was a Saturday so maybe weekend hours not sure of their hours during the week though. Good luck its a beautiful area.

rockart at kruger

Unread post by wildsea » Wed Oct 20, 2010 3:20 pm

Planning a visit to Kruger next year and apart from the wildlife I would love to see some of the rock art here.
Is it possible to see sites from the vehicle or are there ranger walks that take in the rock art sites...or are they off limits?

Hippo pools at Croc Bridge has some, but for the others, you will have to book more than just a walk.

I am shocked to hear about the rock art at Hippo pools .
We always make a point of going there when we are in the area .
Its great to chat to the ranger and just to be out where you know others have been many years ago.

Bushman Paintings at Hippo Pools S27

Unread post by sandy » Tue Jan 11, 2011 1:08 pm

Sadly the 2000 floods washed away the Bushman Paintings at the Hippo Pools.

There must be people out there who have photos of these paintings and that this piece of history has not been completely lost and forgotten.

There is still one painting that can be seen, albeit faint.

Thank you Glen D and Rookie 2009, that's good news, was led to believe by the Guide at Hippo pools in August 2009 that they had been washed away by the 2000 floods.
He took us across the river to see the hippos told us when we enquired said that there were no more paintings. ???
Thank you for the photos...

The ranger is definitely still there and he is the same ranger that has been there for 20+ years.
Visited twice in the recent past, and he is both knowledgeable and friendly (in his own way).
As far as I know, he is there Mon - Fri most of the day, Sat until 11 and not on a Sunday.
In July we had great sightings of interaction between croc and hippo, and fish eagle. Don't forget to see the last remaining peace or rock art, the majority having been destroyed in the 2000 (i think) floods.

Daniel is one of my favourite people in the park, always such a pleasure to stop off at Hippo Pools.
Like Horace has said, his knowledge is fantastic.
Nothing much moves in that area without Daniel knowing about it.
Always eager to share any sightings or happenings in the area.

When I was there about a month ago he pointed out the smallest little tree frog to me..... a million others would have walked right passed, totally unaware of it.

He is an amazing guy

I've just uploaded an old photo of me taken ~ 1994/5 at the Hippo pools together with guide.
Horrace pointed out that Daniel worked at the pools for ~ 20 years.
This photo was taken not more than 18 years back and maybe its Daniel in the photo.
The photo was taken on normal film and I've just taken a digital pic of the original photo, so the quality is not that great but I thought of sharing some nostalgia with you of the '90's.

We went to Hippo Pools last weekend (Saturday) and met up with Daniel.
He is so knowledgeable and pointed out all the game that was passing through, showed us the rock paintings and a tiny frog lying in a crack in the rocks.
We stopped in again on Sunday afternoon but he was not on duty - it was after 4pm so did not expect him to be there. :D
