Accomodation & Car Rental for Kruger

Unread post by caribou » Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:12 pm

Hello everyone!

We (two girls from Europe) are traveling to SA in February. We would like to go to the Kruger National Park. Appearantly, planing the trip to Kruger is not as simple as we thought. We want to keep it as cheap and simple as possible. Is it better to book a organised tour for 3 days with an Agency or to organise it ourselves? We thought about renting a car and just going to the National Park but we are not sure if this is possible?! What is the cheapest way to spend 3 days in Kruger National Park and see as much as possible? We read blogs and articles and our guide book and are more confused than before. :wall:
1. Is a mini car enough to rent?
2. Is it allowed to sleep in the car instead to book an accomodation? Or can we bring our own tent? If no, what are the cheapest accomodations?
3. Can anyone recommend us a round trip in the national park for 3 days?

Many thanks in advance!

1 yes
2 no, yes for camps that allow camping. otherwise check the camps for the smallest/cheapest places. using communal facilities for cooking and showers are cheapest. remember to allow for international entry fees per diem on top of the base tarrif.
3 go in malelane and exit via numbi gate

Warm welcome to the forum Caribou!

Inyanga has already answered some of your questions so I will just elaborate a bit.

The cheapest way will be to rent a small car and self drive in the park
then if you want to do one guided sunset/night for a different experience, you can book that either before hand when doing your reservations or at the camp itself once there.
You may not sleep in your car unless you have booked a camping site.
You certainly can bring a tent but you will have to have all your equipment beforehand which can be quite expensive unless you already have it.
There are some good 2 sleeper budget huts in Lower Sabie offering very good value and other options would be the basic 2 sleeper safari tents in other camps like Skukuza.
There are restaurants and shops in all the main camps and a braai/barbeque outside each bungalow or camping site.
I would advise as this is your first trip to concentrate on the south of the park, try not to move camps too much to maximise your time and enjoyment of being out on the roads looking for all those wonderful sightings of animals and birds.
Please be aware that February is a very hot time of year and you would most probably benefit by having accommodation with either a fan or air con.
Also you will need to make sure you have Malaria prophylaxis but speak to your GP or travel clinic in this regard!

Do ask if there are any further questions we can help with.

Thank you so much!
Is there a difference between the south and the north of the park? Or why would you recommend us the south and not the north? :)

Generally the game is more plentiful in the south of the park which is why it is the busiest section tourist wise so we usually advise first time visitors to concentrate on there and then when you are hooked and come back again for another visit!
you can venture further north which is better known for its wonderful scenery, huge Baobab trees, more of the rare species of antelope and some of our big tuskers.
And especially with your stay of only 3 days which is quite a short stay when you consider how big the park actually is at 2 million hectares or about 8000 sq miles.
