Rain up North

Unread postby K-4S » Tue Jan 12, 2016 2:42 pm

Can anyone give details as to the rain levels up North(Shingwedzi, Punda)? I saw on social media this morning that rivers were looking very full. Is there a chance they could experience flooding again this year? :hmz:

Looking at the Orpen & Satara webcams this morning it seems as if that area of the park received some rain overnight.

Is there anyone who can confirm as such, and does anybody have any more detail on the rain levels over the Satara area in the past 24 hours?

Any information will be welcome.

Hi Carel

We are in Satara, and there was rain overnight. And out on our drive this morning, there has obviously been more rain in some areas than others. There was a heavy downpour for a bit last night, then some softer rain for a while. In the veld there is an area where the water is even running and laying in pools. I do think it has been a huge amount of rain though.

Thats fantastic news DB. That sort of rain will make a huge difference to the growth of new grasses for the grazers and hopefully encourage the trees to burst into full leaf. We noticed that on some of the types of trees, in particular the Acacia's, that the leaf growth was very stunted.

Thank you for the good news DB!

According to some posts this area of the park has been mostly affected by the drought and this will make a huge difference.

I can't wait for our coming visit end March 2016!

As soon as I can, I will post pics taken today. There was heavy rain this afternoon for about 10km between Orpen and Satara, and in the distance we could see heavy rain about 30km north of Satara. Some areas are battling to recover from fire, but close to Orpen new green shoots are coming through.

We took a drive down S 100 to Sweni hide today, this is what all the water courses look like - dry as a bone. A few small pools in the river along the S100 are left and some water at the birdhide.

And this pic is of the veld near Orpen, driving towards Satara. Green shoots are coming through ... but most of the grass is brown and dry.

Thanks for the update DB - I an sure we are all following the rain situation on a daily basis, so news is really appreciated, especially when it is good news!

I am sure that in even another day or so, the N'wanestsi area will look greener, after rain today and yesterday. Let's hope there is some more - it sounds like there was rain up north this evening, based on a couple of posts on Facebook.
