Some years ago, I was driving between Letaba and Shingwedzi (on my own). I checked for something in the rear view mirror when I heard something in front of me. It was the hooves of a buffalo, as he frantically tried to get out of the way of the car. I was almost on top of him, he sprayed my bonnet and windscreen with stuff to show his annoyance. How I managed to missed him, I still don't know. I doubt I would have run over the buffalo with my Renault 5 :P

I just looked away for a couple of seconds and viola, buffalo steps out from behind a mopani shrub. :|

(almost spilled my beer)

You would have run under him Bennie

In November I nearly ran over a lioness's tail. She was lying on the road under the shade near Union's end and I looked away for a second as well.

Last Sunday there were 2 dead baboons on the road between Skukuza and Lower Sabie. It was a very sad, sad sighting. It took away the fun of driving there. It looked as that they had been playing together and were then hit by a car.
Will there be a 2015 trip to South Africa?

I went over a Cameleon on a grvel road. Cried for hours afterwards. I must have been going well under 30km/hour but when I slammed on brakes, my car just "aqua-planed" over the loose sand. I had absolutely no control.

MM I think it can happen to anyone of us no matter how careful we are. Magriet :( about the baboons. We once took a turn-off on a gravel road and next to the road lied a jackal that was hit by a car and the blood and foam was still coming from his/her mouth  . It was also very sad and upsetting. Whether it was an accident or not I would never know.

Me and SO were driving between Satara and lower sabie doing about 20km/h while checking the map to see how far we are away from the picnic site with windows wide open when all of a sudden i heard a noise next to me. Not sure where the poor impala came from but he was right next to the car still trying to stop but sliding on the tar road. Who actually got the biggest fright i'm not sure but i just stopped and couldn't drive further for about 5 minutes
Made my booking for Desember 2014!! Whoohoo

Anybody else drive when you have those scores of armoured crickets near Babalala in the mornings?

By far the “most” animals (relatively spoken as I have not seen that many animals killed by cars in Kruger) that I have seen killed in the road in Kruger was in summer and it was snakes. I do not know what the reason for that is :hmz: perhaps they try to cross the road very quickly and sudden and a person does not have the time to stop and then they are run over by accident  :( .

Grantmissy, I was told that snakes use the road to gather warm. At certain times of the year they are more vulnerable.

I am going to tell you my most horrible story and I don't even know how true it might be :( .

On my last triip, told in "Gogo and the gremlins", I kept in mind that I wanted to see a Narina Trogon. It was my secret dream.

On my way down to Kruger, I decided to take the Schoemans something kloof road. Sorry, I am not good with names.

I was going though a fairly forested area behind a very slow car. I decided to overtake. One of the first things that happened was a thump against my windscreen.

I noted a lovely bird, red, lovely red. Bigger than a barbet. I went to my bird book and my heart froze. Did I kill a Narina trogon?

I cant say that I have ever killed an animal, we hit a bird once, was so horrible! But last year, in the Kruger, we were going about 30 when a lioness suddenly walked out the bushes and my dad, who was driving and getting biltong at the same time, nearly hit it. It was too close for comfort and the lioness gave us this massive death stare! I guess we deserved it...

In our October trip I was accused of being a killer and non purist for driving over a few milipedes :big_eyess: by my mum.
You must have seen them like hundreds deciding to lie on the tar road I tried to safe as many as possible but there were casualties :(

OK, but I must say, Rufie, you really read it all, and I applaud you for being a great forumite, even digging this out from the past.

2010 in addo it was impossible not to drive over some dung beetles - they were everywhere on the roads and it was no nice noise driving over it. 2012 we drove the s3 at about 20 km/h as we nearly hit a big kudu cow that jumped out of the dense bush - impossible to see...
