BEST TIME TO VISIT KRUGER PARK IS WHEN???

Unread post by johanclassen » Sun Nov 03, 2013 11:08 am

This is the type of question which comes up very often, and is not only asked by new visitors to the park.
I am not a boffin on this subject but have, over the years, visited KNP during all seasons, But I am posting three websites which I believe could help a visitor in making a reasonable decision. Those who know the Park well, only need to read between the lines to get an even better picture.
Perhaps those who know the KNP very well might add to this and perform a very handy service to new visitors.

To me the best time to visit Kruger is anytime. I enjoy Kruger all year round. Whether we go there during the dry cold Winter months or the hot, humid, rainy and thunderous Summer...we always have a very pleasant time. The only advice I can add though is the following. During the Winter months, stick to the smaller bush camps, you won't be spending to much time there during the day anyway, as this time of the year is perfect for game spotting at water holes ect. During Summer head for the main camps with lush river views (and swimming pools for the kids and SO). We tend to hang around the camp during the heat of the day. During the rainy season I prefer to stick to the main camps with direct access to the tar roads only because I don't drive a 4 x 4 and almost had a 'got stuck' situation outside Talamati. First time campers should rather steer clear of the rainy seasons lol, nothing beats a Kruger thunderstorm teaching you the basics of camping. Lol In the end I guess it boils down to personal preference. (Sorry that I couldn't answer your question directly)

On a more serious note, I do prefer the winter months and the summer months and the autumn months and oh yes , spring is not bad either.

Elsa , I see you removed the links, only reason I can think of is that, that, is seen as advertising.
I will then have to transcribe the info on especially the one link and repost it? there they show, month by month what to expect??.
I was expecting the answer that anytime is a good time..lol.. but some people do like to plan and spend thousands to get here, and then  It is raining all the time...I cant stay away from Punda in the rainy season, but thats me......anyway, Elsa let me know if I can carry on pse.

In January after the December holidays have come to an end Kruger is more quiet and peaceful. I would therefore say January is a good time to visit the Kruger before the March school holidays and the Easter holidays in April.

I've been a few times in the last week of November/first week of December and found the park remarkably quiet. We've also been lucky with the weather.

January would probably also be quiet, but remember 2012 and 2013 bad floods in mid-January!

I have found that to be a great time as well. It has rained to freshen up the bush, which has not yet 'exploded' and one can still see through it.

Depending on what brings you the most joy ...

November
- traffic is quite easy before the December crowds
- lambs and newborn babies everywhere!
- lush green grass and blooming flowers, yet the bush is not yet thick, affording great game viewing conditions
- The camp gates now open 04:30 and close 18:30, allowing a full 14 hours! There is enough time in the day for 2 long game drives in best game viewing hours + resting at mid day
- The summer migrant birds have arrived!
- the bush is alive with the sounds of insects!
- Wild dogs are very active

End July - August

- All school terms begin around 21July so traffic will be low
- No rain to interrupt game viewing or make miserable camping
- Almost guaranteed perfect light for photography
- Cool temperatures which are more bearable than summer
- Game clustered near water sources
- Grass is low and vegetation less grown out making game viewing easier
- No malaria risk
Kruger 2014!!!

16-23 August - Lower Sabi!!!!

Agreed cheetah2111 - August can also be very nice. We have had some lovely trips then.

Just a point, Private School holidays are 8th August to 9th September this year, and always around that time. That's why we used to go in August, when my girls were still at school! Not same huge number of visitors as Easter, Christmas and Government School holidays, though.
