Information about traveling times

Unread post by andy0186 » Wed Apr 05, 2017 12:38 pm

Good Morning Guys,
I need an information: on the day August 16th we booked a river walk at Olifant Rest Camp at 09:30am and the duration will be 2hours.
We will probably leave from Olifant Camp at 12pm.
We have booked the night of August 16th at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp.

At what time do we have to be at Pretoriuskop Camp? Do you think is it possible to be there on time if we drive along this way (Olifant Camp / Nsemani Dam / Orpen Dam / Nkumbe View Site / Mathekeyane / Pretoriuskop ) considering maximun vehicle speed permitted?

Thanks for your help
Andrea

Firstly a vey warm welcome. :gflower:

The shortest route from Olifants to Pretoruis Kop is 195 kilometers. The route you are looking at adds about another 60 kms. That makes it about 250 kms.

The gate closing time in August is 6 pm and the speed limit is 50kms/hr.

It is suggested that people look at factoring in a speed of about 25km/hr to factor in sightings and stops. (Over 10 hours) Unfortunately this would make it a very rushed and tense trip. You would be lucky to get to Pretorius Kop even at the max speed limit.

You would have to either not do the walk, or stay at a closer camp. Is there any specific reason why you want Pretorius Kop?

Andrea, even as a direct route the distance is 204 kms which might not seem a lot but will be fairly difficult to achieve factoring in comfort stops and sightings at the speeds conducive for good spotting.
Could you not change your booking to say Skukuza which would make it a much more relaxed drive?

I agree with Elsa about Skukuza. You could then put Mathekenyane on the agenda for the next day, if you run out of time.

August is a very popular month, because of the sparse bush and frequency of sightings. If you are rushing, you might find that you cannot stop at any sightings.

Hey Guys,
first of all i want to thank you all for your suggestions.

We need another information.

We have booked these two activities:
- Day 16th River Walk at Olifants, so we need to sleep there the night before
- Day 17th Morning Walk at Pretoriuskop, so we need to sleep there the night before.

Well-founded that we cannot do the River Walk and arrive on time at Pretoriuskop,
do you think it is better to choose the River Walk at Olifants or the Morning Walk at Pretoriuskop?

Thank you :D

River Walk at Olifants. We did it, it is really special to be able to walk along the river.

A morning walk is also very special. How long are you in the Park for, and what other camps are you staying at? You do have enough time before August to try and book a walk at another camp, other than Pretoriuskop.

I have to agree with DB. It really is a unique experience.

Could you not do a morning walk from Skuks? My children did a morning walk from Skukuza recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.
