Nearest town to restock mid trip

Unread post by penolva » Tue Oct 10, 2017 12:33 pm

Hi we are planning an extended trip to Kruger next October. The itinerary is this, subject to being able to secure bookings on the 23rd of course

Byamati 3 nights
Lower Sabi 3 nights
Talamati 2 nights
Shimwini 2 nights
Bataleur 3 nights
Pafuri 3 nights

We will do our main shop in Nelspruit but I can see that mid trip we will need to restock with veggies, fruit etc. Last trip we left the park from Phalaborwa gate but I can't remember if there are shops near the gate there? I do remember the biggest pot holes we had ever seen that nearly swallowed the Hilux  We really want to make a quick visit to some decent shops so we don't waste any Kruger time.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? I was hoping we wouldn't have to rely on the Kruger shops if possible. Thanks Pen

There is a Spar supermarket just a few kms from the Phalaborwa gate. I am sure there are other shops in Phalaborwa, not too far away. I have only stopped at the Spar and the nearby fuel station.

Phalaborwa Gate is a very good place to leave the park to do shopping as there is a Spar shop hardly a km down the road and also a Woolworths store in the town itself.
Lots of info and advice in the topic Shopping en route to Kruger.

Phalaborwa also has a Pick n Pay; Checkers and Shoprite and for chemist - there is a Clicks nearby Pick n Pay. Woolworths is across the road from PnP.....
In fact, all these shops are within walking distance of each other except for Spar. When we were last in Phala (about 3 weeks ago) the large Total garage near Spar was closed - don't know why. There are other petrol stations on the way into Phala centre though.
Hope this helps!

We had a similar itinerary and have successfully headed out at Phalaborwa for a quick restock. If you manage to get fully stocked on meat and don’t mind paying a few extra rands the shops have really stepped up within the park. Tomato, lettuce, potatoes, carrots, cabbage as well as dress bread and milk. Eggs and cheese also available. You might find you don’t need to head out.

Thank you once again for the great suggestions. I have had a look on Google Earth street view and located the Woolworths. Its not very far from the gate and we will have plenty of time between Shimwini and Bataleur to spend an hour restocking. Pen

The Woolies has a smaller food range than in other big centers, but still decent. They close early on a Sunday.

If you are unable to reach the shop on time, I find the Phala Spar really very, very good. I once bought a very nice meal there and ate it at the Massorini picnic site.

Enjoy your trip.
