SA National Parks Week Dates Announced for 2017

South African National Parks (SANParks) will be opening its 12th annual SA National Parks Week at Golden Gate Highlands National Park from 18 to 22 September 2017. This initiative in partnership with Total SA and FNB is in line with SANParks vision statement of ‘A sustainable National Park System Connecting Society”.

Since its inception in 2006; National Parks Week, under the theme ‘Know Your National Parks’, has seen an influx of over 286 935 day visitors in all participating parks. SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni says that the idea of a national parks focus week is a world-wide campaign. “The week was established in a bid to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system.”

The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. It should be noted that free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities. Some of the parks will be extending the week to include the weekend. Individual park dates to be announced soon.

SA National Parks Week has proved to be a successful campaign in terms of education and awareness of conservation issues. “The survival of the South African national parks system and our natural and cultural heritage lies in the people of South Africa. Environmental education and protection is the responsibility of everyone, not just a privileged few,” said Mketeni.

All of the parks managed by SANParks excluding Namaqua National Park and Boulders Penguin Colony in Table Mountain National Park will be participating in the initiative to give the public an understanding of the role that SANParks plays as custodian of the country’s natural heritage. The excluded Parks will apply normal entry tariffs, as they have been declared non-participants in the free access scheme, due to the seasonality of their product offering.

“If we are to create a sense of ownership of the natural heritage of South Africa in all South Africans, then all South Africans must be able to have access to such. We especially want our young people to take advantage of this opportunity because this heritage will be under their protection in the near future,” concluded Mketeni. Don’t miss out on this annual event to experience South Africa’s beautiful natural heritage.

Today marks a month to the 12th edition of SA National Parks Week

17 August 2017

Today, 17 August 2017, marks exactly a month to the official opening of the most exciting week in the calendar of South African National Parks. SA National Parks Week will officially be launched on the 17th of September 2017 at an event to be officiated by the minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, at Golden Gate Highlands National Park (GGHNP) in the eastern Free State.

South African National Parks (SANParks) hosts South African National Parks Week annually. During the week all South African citizens are allowed to enter most national parks for free as day visitors. Since its inception in 2006, National Parks Week has seen an influx of over 220 000 day visitors in all participating national parks. The concept of SA National Parks Week was established in a bid to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system.

As from Monday, 18 September 2017, South African citizens can gain free entry to a (participating) national park of their choice and that includes Mapungubwe-, Marakele- and Kruger National Park in the Limpopo Province. GGHNP, Mapungubwe- and Marakele National Park will extend the free entry week to Sunday, 24 September 2017, whilst Kruger National Park is offering free access until Friday, 22 September 2017.

“We are hoping to see an influx of people at all our parks, especially as Sunday the 24th of September is Heritage Day, which is all about celebrating our heritage and culture and what a better way to celebrate than spending a day in a national park” said Lombard Shirindzi, General Manager of the Northern Region Parks. “Our theme for this year is still ‘Know your national parks’ and we encourage one and all to visit these parks that are full of rich history and heritage”.

School groups, community members and higher education institutions are encouraged to use this opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge about the deep heritage entrenched in our national parks. All that is required is for individuals to produce their green bar-coded South African identity documents.

A detailed programme on the activities lined up for the week will be posted on the SANParks website soon. Large groups such as school groups and communities are encouraged to call the parks and pre-book to avoid waiting for long. Parks contacts are as follows: Mapungubwe (015) 534 7923/4, Marakele (014) 777- 6929 and Golden Gate (058) 255 0937.
