This is an old riddle, and may have been asked here before. Nevertheless, it is one of my favourites, and so I'll ask it again:

John, James, and George all book into a hotel. The clerk behind the reception desk says they owe him R300, so they split the bill and each friend pays R100. A while later, the clerk figures he made an error by overcharging the boys, and that the bill should only be R250. What to do. After some contemplation, he decides to rectify things by giving the extra R50 to the porter and telling him to return it to the boys. The porter is a clever lad and, while walking to the room, realises that he cannot divide the money equally with what he was given. Since the boys don't know what amount the cost has been revised to, the wily porter pockets R20 and passes on R30 to the boys. Now the mathematical crux of the problem has been reached. John, James, and George each received R10 back from the hotel, which means that each one paid a total of R90, and so the overall bill was R270, not R300. The porter has R20 in his pocket, and R270 + R20 = R290. What has happened to the remaining R10?[/

The solution is that really the R20 should be subtracted from the R270 to get to the actual amount paid which was R250.... Does that make sense? :D

:hmz: But what's wrong with the logic in the puzzle? If one looks at it, it seems to make sense, yet there is that R10 supposedly missing.

No money missing, intuitively:

The hotel was paid R250, the guys each got back R10 = R30 and the porter was "paid" R20 therefore the total is R300.

Yes, you're both correct.  The mistake comes in reworking the amount that each friend supposedly paid to the hotel, but the arithmetic is faulty. Each boy did pay R90, but he did not pay it all to the hotel, and it is this fallacious assumption that stirs up the trouble. Each one actually paid R83.30 to the hotel (R83.30 × 3 = R250) and R6.60 to the porter (R6.60 × 3 = R20), for a total of R270 spent by the group. R250 + R20 = R270, as does R90 × 3.
