Well the sweet (Eutrophic-fertile) grasses dominate in the eastern half of kruger where the soil is basaltic in origin so satara, lower sabie. The sour (dystrophic-unfertile) grasses are dominant in westrn kruger where soil is granitic in origin so mopani and berg en dal. But then in the west there are also the Gabbro intrusions that have vegetation charateristiccs similar to the east.

Hiya Ods, good to  you again.

Grazing lawns - co-evolution between herds of grazing animals and unique communities of grazing-tolerant grass species.

Grazing lawns are recognized as important components of many savanna ecosystems, but there is no clarity on their origin or their stability in space and time. Some researchers believe soil nutrients control grazing lawn distributions. Others believe feedbacks created by herding mammals grazing in patches can promote the spread of grazing lawns without soil nutrient differences. This in turn is affected by rainfall and fire.

Spot on E!  great to be back

Another thing to add would be that most commonly stoloniferous grasses would grow on grazing lawns as they grow very close to the ground reducing the sizes of bites herbivores can take so as to prevent overgrazing. Foraging ecologists have found that the wildebeest around orpen gate in KNP move from one grazing lawn to another and due to lowered vigilance between lawns that is where they are preyed upon

Your IT E

Great Q, thanks Ods.

...... indicates that veld is in good condition. The more it burns, the more it becomes resistant to fire, subject to it having a rest in between. This grass as an awning-twirling effect, ensuring that seeds reach the soil.

It might be 'slang' for the grass I'm looking for. Let me have the Latin name so that I can check.

I also initially thought it may be spear grass / assegaai gras (Heteropogon contortus), but spear grass is not an indication of good veld condition. In fact quite the opposite. It will be found in areas that has been heavily damaged, such as through over grazing and areas that has been eroded or ploughed.

The rest of the description is a good fit.

Please don't call the common names of things slang   It is very often much more useful than the latinized version. Just my humble opinion. :)

Imberbe, I'm all for 'slang' (volksmond), trust me. It's just that spear grass was not part of the Latin, Dutch, French, Italian, English, Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, Venda, Tsonga, Afrikaans or Latin name of the grass that I have in mind. And I want to ensure that I'm not saying :naughty: when I should be saying  .

Are you referring to Red grass / Rooi gras (Themeda trianda)?
