True or false? Owls are far-sighted, meaning that anything within a few inches of their eyes can’t be seen properly.

Good Q, Philip.

Strangely, it's TRUE - you wouldn't think it considering their hunting expertise - they are indeed unable to focus acutely on near-sighted objects; which is why they rush the prey at high speed once its sighted and grab it in one motion if they can.

True or False: Once central-nervous-system symptoms begin to show after a person has contracted rabies, the infection is virtually untreatable and almost always results in death?

Heksie, Phokojwe ...  Which is why, if one is bitten by an animal suspected of having rabies, it is vital that post-exposure prophylaxis is taken. Very expensive, mind you, but you cannot put a price on life (especially as it's so expensive to die these days  ).

I'll hand it over to the first of you two to post the next Q ...

True with the black mamba-not like to see them in the bush
But I believe that the boomslang prefer slithering away than attacking?

Firstly, Phokojwe, I assume you're referring to it being poisonous to humans? Secondly, it all depends how the question is interpreted. :hmz: In terms of its venom having the ability to kill the victim it bites (potency of the venom), it definitely is one of the most VENOMOUS snakes in the world. However, in terms of number of victims that are bitten and/or die, the boomslang is way down the list - this being a result of its unwillingness to face an intruder and rather to retreat if it's able, as well as it being rear-fanged and therefore more difficult for it to inflict a serious bite. Most boomslang bites to humans are due to the snake being handled, cornered, or chased. Therefore, the boomslang is not actually a POISONOUS snake. And so, as it stands, I will the statement is indeed FALSE.

    Well done onewithnature and thanks for the comprehensive explanation.
It was indeed a trick question as snakes are not poisonous but rather VENOMOUS
