Removal of the ATM facility at Letaba Rest Camp

Unread post by Lesego » Thu Feb 11, 2016 10:32 am

Please note that the FNB ATM facilty at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, has been removed as from today (10 February 2016), by the service provider.

A slimline mini FNB ATM is available in the camp's shop. Instead of holding cash like a conventional ATM, clients are presented with a slip which they can then cash at the retailer's till. The following restrictions apply:

1. The cash withdrawal is dependent on the sales at the shop for the day.
2. International banking cards are not accepted.

The closest conventional ATM is available in Phalaborwa.

That's a real shame. I suppose it just wasn't cost effective enough for them to keep it open.

Do you know if there are any plans to remove the Skukuza ATM at some point?

That`s really a shame. The oversea visitors will have problems. Why no international Cards?
So most probably the visitors will buy less in the shops.

i have had no problems using my uk cards in the shops and at those fuel stations that accept cards in the park.

so much safer than carrying cash

- not a sanparks issue - but remember if you leave an atm
you are probably carrying cash
wherever in the world you are.
try doing so in pairs !

Hello Lesego,
Could you please explain what International Banking Cards mean? We have used an Australian eftpos Keycard in the past for such withdrawals at Letaba. Will such cards be a problem?

The Skukuza ATM was upgraded a while ago, and is attached to the bank branch there. I do not think they will remove that one! The branch does well with the staff complement at Skukuza and always seems busy.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Was at the Letaba ATM last year May and it didn't have money anyway. Asked in the shop and they told me it was empty for 2 weeks already at that time. So I think the closure was coming for while.

This issue around ATM's was one of my biggest bug bears on our recent KNP trip - none of the northern camps had a conventional ATM which, as an international visitor, made it impossible to get cash. We did a withdrawal at the airport on arrival, and based on past experience expected to be able to draw in the Park. The "no international card" problem soon struck and I ended up just using my CC for the rest of the trip.

This is really a pain for international visitors - most people expect to be able to draw or change money fairly readily nowadays and not having this facility available except in Skukuza is an issue (IMO). I know it's not SANParks problem but it can have an effect on the visitors and it would be nice if one of the more northern camps still had a standard ATM.

Timepilot, would you mind sending what you posted here to customercare@sanparks.org so the request is forwarded to the correct powers that be. Perhaps if there is enough demand, SANParks could put pressure for a better service.

Sorry to hijack this thread slightly but reading it has raised a question for me :hmz:

Am I reading that international debit cards no longer work in the few ATM machines there are in Kruger?

Thanks to anyone who knows the answer :hmz:

Note nice to hear :(

This really bugs me, we already had trouble in the southern region of the park - we couldn't pay with international cards in the shop in lower sabie (visa/amex credit nor maestro). Olifants fuel station was cash only as well...and getting money at the shops isn't possible either with international cards. skukuza was the only option after all for us.
Carrying around cash IN the park is a lot better than cashing up outside with money for 1 week or more.

Of course, leaving the park is always an option but next summer holidays we'll spend 12 days opree/satara northwards. We didn't really plan to visit Phalaborwa but we probably will.

Will do

@Merlin11 - apart from the ATM at Skukuza, all of the rest are mini ATM's which do not accept international debit cards. The camps that used to have a full size ATM were always a stopping place to get cash - but these all seem to be gone now.
