I can seem to be able to find an online booking facility for Sable Hide. How does one book for this?

Phone Central Reservations in office hours. Their number is under "Contact Us". :D
I don't get to the Parks nearly often enough, despite two trips to the KNP and one to Golden Gate this year.

If you book at the hides, do you have the place to yourself or are you sharing it with other people?

Unread post by benjita1 » Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:20 pm

Hi,

Is there a way to reserve an overnight stay in Sable hide online or by email?

benjita 1 this can be done through the normal booking process either online or via email
as far as I know. The only difference is that you check into Phalaborwa Gate as your "main
camp"

A warm welcome Hannes.

I have slept at the Shipandani hide and it was a very, very special experience. The Sable hide is now very high on my wishlist.

The forumites who have stayed over at the hide have had only good things to say. Sadly, because Photobucket has kept our images ransom, many pictures are no longer available.

We stayed at Sable Dam a few years back...

Yes, you have to book through central reservations. Check-in is at Phalaborwa gate.

As for how the experience was... awesome! In a way it is more convenient than Shipandani, because you can pull your car into the enclosure. This means that you don't necessarily have to carry everything you will need into the hide, and carry it back out the next morning.

These are the tips I came up with for our blog after our recent stay in Shipandani - they are very relevant for Sable dam too

  • Keep dinner simple. You don’t want to be outside, minding the braai, if something worth seeing happens in front of the hide.
  • Take a kettle that you can use on the braai - you will want some coffee!
  • Take warm clothes / sleeping bags. The draft through the hide gets freezing cold in the early morning hours.
  • Take a decent spotlight, but remember not to shine it into animals’ eyes!
  • Tale a cushion of some sort to site on. Those narrow benches get hard after a few hours!
  • Take extra snacks – if, like us, you feel that your time alone, at night, in the bush is too special to spend it sleeping, the night gets long. (also, make sure you are wll rested before you go!
  • Don’t make too much light in the hide. You can see better outside if you let your eyes become accustomed to the dark.

This is the braai area:

And, just to whet your apatite... the sunset from the hide!
