Favourite camp, choices.

Unread post by alf » Fri Jun 27, 2008 7:37 am

Everyone of us has our own favourite camps that we always go back to no matter what the reasons may be. I have a few favourite camps that i always try to fit into my trip to the KNP. My number 1 camp is Lower Sabie where i had a wonderful stay with an amazing view over the sabie river. Then my second camp is Satara camp. Plenty of game in the area with lions roaring all around the camp all night long. Then my third camp must be Letaba. Very peaceful camp and wonderful view over the letaba river. Plenty of ellies in this area.

That's my 3 most favourite camps  . My Kruger trip isn't complete without visiting these camps.

Favourites?? Its easier to list those I don't like!!
Skukuza- Why you ask. isn't the game viewing great there?
Yes it is But the camp is like a small town and I leave the big bad city to get away from it all and not into another smaal town

Very difficult but i would say my top 5 would be: Olifants, Orpen, Letaba, Biyamiti and Shimuwini :D

All have something special to offer but I guess that as long as you are in the park nothing else matters :D !
A bird in the hand should be in the Bush!! ;)

Kruger is my FAVOURITE. The camps that we are going to again and again, are
1. Lower Sabie (Safari Tents) 2. Tamboti (Tents). Favourite camp to visit during daytime, Skukuza. Favourite picnic spot, Timbavati. Favourite restaurants, Lower Sabie deck and Selati. Favourite spot, Orpen dam near Tshokwane. Kruger is very special, can't stay away - acute AFRICAN FEVER.

There are threads for this in the POLLS section already.

I see at least two, one for main camps and one for bush camps.

I have just returned from my 12th visit to the Kruger and it is only getting BETTER and BETTER.

Favourite camp? Still, after all the years, it stays LOWER SABIE for me. The accom (stayed in the Safari Tents with a river view) was spotless, the service at reception (I kept on trying for more nights and they kept on smiling every time I was at the desk) was friendly and efficient and the sightings GOOD !! We found leopard between LS and Skukuza 5 times (can you believe it), lion, lots of elephants bathing around 12h00, rhino (lots of them), buffalo (bathing), hippos on my doorstep - in short, the big 5 are there. It is very dry, so all the game are near the river.

I thank LS for a wonderful stay, if hope to visit them, and only them, next year, same time. May you be blessed by good rains this summer.

if i must choose one favourite it's lower-sabie because:-
- small enough to be friendly
- good accomodation
- the most beautifull and ecologically diverse river in KNP
- flood damage to river not so visable
- good choice of different drives in many directions
- diversity and density of sightings on any drive out among the best

runners up (from south to north) are - mbyamiti , talamati , satara , orpen , roodewal , letaba , shingwedzi , sirheni and punda-maria . but not one of these (with each it's own special charm) has everything that lower-sabie has going for it .

Haven't been to all the camps but form those that I know:
1) Letaba:- Layout; river view; Special moment with Big Ele.
2) Satara:- Not so much the camp but the area!
3) BenD:- Good game and great camp site.

Skukuza would be my least favourite. If I want to hear my neighbours partying till 4AM I can stay in Pretoria!
Stiffneck on the loose.....
Latest Lifer:= Lesser Crested Tern; Rufous Winged Cisticola.
