In South Africa, the Makuleke people have reclaimed the northernmost reaches of the Kruger National Park (land between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers) from which they were removed in 1969 to make this area part of the Kruger National Park. Realising the benefits to be gained from conservation, the Makuleke community decided that the land would remain in conservation and that they would further develop the area for its tourist potential.

The Makuleke are closely related through family ties and culturally to the Sengwe people who live just north of the Limpopo River in Zimbabwe. They, and many of those living along the Limpopo in Mozambique, are Shangaan speaking.

In the Makuleke CNP, countless trees were blown over or snapped by a storm, which only lasted 20 minutes or so.
The Fever Tree forest took a big hit. I counted at least 12 lying across the track to Fernandez' store.
Most trees were not uprooted but had their trunks broken at a height of 5-10 meters.
Ana trees were badly affected as well.
Believe it or not, but even a fair-sized Baobab was blown over.
Roofs were also ripped off buildings.

Hi Bart47,

Pafuri Camp belongs to Wilderness Safaris, but the floods 2 years back destroyed the camp.
As far as I know it has not been rebuilt yet.

I'm pretty sure the roads are all private roads in there.
Really not sure whether there is someone who is authorized to take drives in there.
Maybe one of our "fundis' will be able to answer that. 8)

I'm really glad to see someone rebuilt the camp. I really like the pafuri area and would love stay a couple nights there the next visit!

Thanks for the link! Looks very similar to the previous Wilderness camp (which I loved). Good to hear it is up and running again. :D Would also love to go again. First have to save up for it...
