Advice/opinions regarding KNP booking

Unread post by Sigmund » Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:38 pm

Hi all

Mods, please move to appropriate location if this is the wrong one 8)

I am just throwing something out there in order to get an average opinion from members.

I have a booking for later this year of which the first six nights are as follows:

2 nights Croc Bridge - camping
2 nights Balule - camping
2 nights Satara - camping

This morning a few bookings became available and I added another night to Croc Bridge...in other words entering the Park a day earlier.

I now have the following options:

1) Keep the booking as is with an extra night added to Croc Bridge
2) Move the booking a day between camps with 2 nights Croc Bridge, 3 nights Balule, 2 nights Satara
3) Move the booking a day between camps with 2 nights Croc Bridge, 2 nights Balule, 3 nights Satara

A bit of background...
a) This will be our fourth trip to KNP...first was in 2012
b) First time camping in KNP.....all other trips were bungalows. Not first time campers however. Hardcore "roughing it" campers and self sufficient in terms of power
etc.
c) All other trips included a stay in Satara and we like it there 8)
d) First time to Croc Bridge and Balule.

My question is what option would you choose between 1, 2 and 3?

From what I've gathered in reading forums, FB etc and keeping in mind that we prefer camping in the wild un-fenced camps in Kgalagadi, Moremi, Chobe etc. with as little facilities as possible, my brain leans to more days at Balule?

So many choices, so little time :D

Any opinion would be appreciated.
2015 14 days KNP 8)

2016 Nossob 24-25 June - Polentswa 26-30 June - Mata Mata 1-3 July - Rooiputs 4-6 July
Augrabies 7-8 July

2017 Crocodile Bridge 25-26 Sep - Balule 27-28 Sep - Skukuza 29-30 Sep - Lower Sabie 1-6 October

I've never stayed in Balule, but I know many people absolutely love it.
I would go with either option 1 or 3, slightly leaning towards 3.

All options sound pefect though.

I would go for your option 3. Lots of roads in all directions from Satara and, potentially, good game viewing area!

All the best for whatever you do and happy game viewing.

I like the option of another night at Croc Bridge!
It's a smallish but nice camping area in an area with great sightings and gives you a good relaxed start to your trip, with
3 nights before you have to pack up to move on! (after a long journey to Kruger?)
If you can possibly spend yet another night in the park, then 3 nights at Satara, which you know you like, would be a good way to finish after 2 days at secluded Balule.
Enjoy your planning & your trip!

Sigmund, all that I can say is that no matter what the choice, you cannot go wrong. Really, you have chosen some of the most game rich areas.

The only suggestion that I am going to make is that if it is school holidays, the go for option 3, as Balule is the quietest camp. If it is not school holidays, I would consider option 1. That would give you 3 nights in the south and 4 nights in the central area. Balule and Satara do share a lot of roads. I have noted your love of silence and Croc Bridge can get rather busy in the holiday season.

Hello Sigmund

We are not campers but we are crazy about Satara probably because we spend 99% of the time driving during the day on all the many road options offered in that area with lots of stops at other camps and picnic spots.Apart from sleeping we do not spend that much time in Camp.So the size and bustle does not bother us.
My leaning would be towards Option 3 but I am biased. Many many visitors live to go to Balule which looks like such a tranquil and more compact camp with much more of a personalised experience I would imagine.

I have included two links dealing with Satara camping and Balule Camp which may or may not make your choice easier

I'd go with option 2. Camping at Balule....
What about option 4...
Spend the first night at croc bridge in a safari tent; then 3 nights at Balule and 3 at Satara....
