Does anyone know if the Honeyguide Map/Booklet is available at the Phalaborwa gate? Or Shimuwini? I suppose it will be available at Olifants, but I would like to try to buy a copy before we get to Olifants. Can't seem to find any way to purchase other than in the park.
Thanks!

I doubt very much it will be available at Shimuwini but a better chance at Phalaborwa gate.
Otherwise there are some printable ones around to go on with in the mean time.

map of Kruger upon arrival?

Unread post by doug16 » Fri Sep 01, 2017 1:45 am

When I drive into the park will they issue me a detailed map? If not, can I pick one up in Jo-burg? If so, which is recommended? I prefer something that shows all the roads not just the main ones. I've downloaded a decent PDF, but a guide book I'm reading refers to little roads that aren't on the map.

Thanks!
Doug

Hi Doug and Welcome!

Excellent official KNP map books are for sale at the gates and at the camp shops. It sometimes can happen that the gate where you enter is out of stock for the maps book in your preferred language, but should that happen, you usually will be able to find the map book that you want at your first camp. These map books also include pictures of the animals and birds that you are likely to see, plus lots of other useful information about the park.

Have a great trip!

Yes I love my book, it is very well used and sellotaped back together in several places.

Just to give you an idea before you go, and in case your first gate does not have them, you can find a map of the park online and print it off, There is one on the main website, and plenty of others as well.

Doug, I like the maps so much, that I buy a new one each time I visit.

I wish you a wonderful stay and many, many good sightings.

I agree with meandering mouse, we buy one each time we visit Kruger. It's a fabulous map and guide to all the animals, reptiles and birds within the park. It is also a great keepsake. We refer to it often at home when discussing various roads etc in the park. A fantastic resource!

We also buy a map booklet, actually the 2 variations, each time we go to Kruger.

The last time we went, July, I bought a hard cover book which has the roads in each region rated for their sightings. I think it's called Kruger Self Drive.

The map books for sale at the gates / camps is excellent and well worth buying. But if you are planning from afar, there are two sources of good quality maps online: (i) detailed maps with vegetation zones from siyabona (http://www.krugerpark.co.za/Maps_of_Kruger_Park-travel/explore-kruger-map-south-east.html) and (ii) slightly coarser scale but with most waterholes named from safari.com (https://www.safari.com/kruger-national-park/maps/kruger-park-far-south-section/). Note that these maps are a few (maybe 10?) years old and a number of the waterholes and dams are no longer maintained.

This forum has a nice link of all roads - so when you read something you can easily reference the area: Index to roads

I recommend the Kruger Park - Map and Guide(updated by the tinkers) it was well laid out, detailed and illustrated with many beautiful photographs! It also makes a great souvenir that you can look back on when you want to reminisce about your trip :gflower:

You can pick it up at any of the shops around KNP.

Hope that helps : )
