Malelane Campsite Availability

Unread post by Son godin » Wed May 10, 2017 7:04 pm

I noticed that the availability at Malelane campsite decreased dramatically to only 5 and les sites from 1 November 2017. Is it another group that booked out 10 campsites up front for 6 months, will Pretoriuskop Tented Adventurous move their tents to Malelane or increase their number of campsites or is the low availability due to upgrades at Malelane camp or gradual closure of the camp.

It will be highly unlikely that from 1 November 2017 to 30 April 2018 more than 10 sites are booked out on a daily base, while the availability looks different a day before 1 November 2017 and for most of this year. Even during school holidays in October the availability is higher as well as September compare to after November with more than 10 sites available 4 months from now compare to the period mentioned between 5 - 11 months in advance. After Oct school holiday between 13 - 15 sites daily are available with 15 sites available on Tuesday, 31 October. Then the big change in availability from the 1 Nov when it drops to 5 and less until April. No difference as in the past can be seen between before and after December school holiday as well. Surprisingly Jan and Feb 2018, that are not very popular time to book, 10 sites are booked out.

Can SANParks investigate and give us feedback on the Malelane situation? If it is reserved for a tour operator with permanent tent as in the case of Pretoriuskop the remaining 5 sites to the public will most likely be the ones that are always taken up last due to location uneven / no or limited shade. Currently only 10 sites next to the fence and if it will be occupied by permanent tent the regular visitors will no longer have the opportunity to get good campsites. Looks like July and October will be the last of families camping there during school holiday with only 5 sites available.

Why the delay in response. Surely its easy to check in 5 minutes who booked out these sites. :hmz:
