Re: Kudu hunted down on Afsaal stoep

Unread postby click click » Mon Sep 28, 2015 10:48 am

I arrived on the scene shortly after the remains of the kudu has been removed. They've loaded the carcass onto a bakkie and dropped it off in the veld. One of the cleaning ladies (she stays in the staff village on the property) told me that they found lots of hyena on the carcass when they arrived for work that morning. There were lots of bloodied hyena tracks everywhere and it was a big mess which they then started to clean up. She believed the kudu was cornered on the verandah and killed by the hyenas. I can post more photos if you want.

Thank you for posting this Bundi and Elsa and others for adding more information.

This emphasises to me again that visitors should at all times adhere to the rules and the regulations of the Kruger Park for their own safety as a hunt by predators could happened during daylight hours too. I suppose when a person is at a picnic spot there is not much that a person can do when something like this suddenly happens, except to  to not get run over or to get in the way.

I don't think that hyenas will be able to corner a kudu out in the veld. IMHO, the slippery concrete stoep in the culprit. The hyenas must have chased the kudu onto the stoep and when the kudu tried to jump or run away, it slipped and couldn't get up again. Lions use this trick with giraffes on wet tar roads.

I like both of your comments - Grantmissy and Rooies!

Last month I was at Nkulu and there were mating lions in the bushes, just the other side of the road. People were leaving the car park on foot and standing in the road. When one of the site staff asked them to come back they refused!! The staff said the lions had been right next to the car park, almost in the picnic site, in the early morning.

I heard of a kudu being chased into the bar area of a private camp in another game reserve! I am sure this one was trying to get way from hyenas/lions and slipped on the floor. Falling down then gave the predator the opportunity to go for the kill. Grizzly, but that's nature!

Where is Afsaal's Ox wagon?

Unread postby Xcapee » Tue Sep 29, 2015 2:22 pm

Hi

Can anyone tell me what has happened to the old transport ox wagon that was displayed at Afsaal picnic spot for many many years ?

I have searched this forum and found some other people asking the same question, but no answers!

Thanks Elsa
Although the atmosphere at Afsaal is not what it used to be, the old wagon was always there to remind one of the past an show & tell the children /grandchildren a piece of history. Instead of taking it away, they actually could have displayed it even better. I just hope it didn't end up as firewood!
Lets see if we can get some answers to this mystery!

Hi All, last week when we were at Afsaal I noted that the oxwagon is not at its spot at the back of the shop. I ask one of the staff members who indicated that the oxwagon was moved to Jock Safari Lodge.

Probably safer there! When one looks at the state of Afsaal. Pathetic compared to what it used to be!!!
