Q & C

Unread post by Madalla » Mon Nov 21, 2016 6:14 pm

I am watching this cam not so much for the animals but rather to glimpse the first green shade as the grass around it is starting to sprout.
It will be a glorious sight.!

Nossob Lions

Unread post by Barb15584 » Wed Nov 23, 2016 2:29 am

Over the past 10 days or so, there seems to have been a lot of lion activity at the Nossob watering hole, and was wondering if people visiting the park can indicate if a small pride has set up temporary camp nearby.

Tortoise and Hyenas

Unread post by Barb15584 » Thu Dec 22, 2016 5:28 pm

I had just watched a tortoise having a drink on the Satara Webcam and the following questions occurred to me: Do tortoises have any defense against the bone crushing power of a hyena's jaw, and do hyenas pray on them.

Nossob waterhole looks polluted!

Unread post by Trrp-trrrrrrrr » Thu Dec 22, 2016 7:03 pm

Noticed the waterhole seems to be polluted :( ...Not sure if it is dung perhaps :hmz:
It was not there this morning looking back to earlier posts today! :|
If I did not know better, would have thought some Hippo's from Kruger may have stopped by during the day!

Barb15584 the hyena’s are both hunters and scavengers. They have powerful jaws and would select the easiest and most attractive food so a tortoise would probably be taken for a meal if the opportunity exists and if there are no other food sources available. The powerful jaws and digestive tract system of the hyena allow them to process and obtain nutrients from skin and bones.

We've had a very good look at the pic of the "three-tusked" ellie, but unfortunately it is only a piece of the ground perfectly captured between what must be elephants leg, to give the appearance of a third tusk. If you look closely enough, you'll see it's the colour of the ground and not as light as the other tusks. Wouldn't it be amazing, though, if it was a third tusk?
