Identification Help - General Birds

Unread post by Barcud » Thu Dec 16, 2010 6:56 pm

Hi MM,

You are right with a type of "finch". I'm going for Red-billed Firefinch based on the bill colour and prominent yellow eye-ring.

Dying to know what you saw next???

Not 100% sure on this one ... is it a female redbilled firefinch? Seen at Mapungubwe in late October 2014.

Not female... rather juvenile RBFF: see the small white gape tubercle and grey eye ring (adult fem eye ring = yellow)

Thanks JvR, yet again I am learning something new and useful

I saw quite a few different juveniles in late October/early November, many of them intriguingly baffling. Yesterday it took me quite some time to work out that what looked like "greenish louries", also seen at Mapungubwe, were in fact juvenile redfaced mousebirds 8) :)

Is this one also a juvenile RBFF? Or perhaps a female this time? While the eye ring appears to be grey, I don't see the white gape tubercle ... but that may be due to the angle of the photo?

That eye ring is more yellow than grey, arks. Compare it with the previous shot and the difference is quite marked.

Thanks Johan! I wasn't sure about the eye-ring colour as it's such a very pale yellow. Your help in pointing out the subtle differences is always much appreciated. :gflower:
