Warbler, Cinnamon-breasted

Unread post by Johan van Rensburg » Thu Dec 15, 2016 6:31 am

One of the Western Cape specials, endemic to Namibia and South Africa, it has not given me much photographic opportunity during previous sightings. Preferring sparsely vegetated rocky outcrops, boulder-strewn slopes and mountainsides, the quiet and mysterious Cinnamon-breasted Warbler (Euryptila subcinnamomea) is peculiar enough to have been accorded its own genus. Its behaviour resembles that of a diminutive rockjumper, bounding about sun-baked boulders and calling fervently before inexplicably disappearing for long periods. This time, however, I got treated to a serenading pair!

We were on a mission to get the Karoo Eremomela at Eierkop. BB needed this warbler for his life list and I stopped along the R355 at a picnic spot next to a rocky outcrop that has a near vertical face on the southern side and a steep slope on the northern side, a place known to have a few of these birds. We worked the cliff side first, finding rock martins and a mountain wheatear. Walking around the outcrop base the easier sloped sunny side quickly revealed our prize!
728 Latest lifers: Hartlaub's babbler, Coppery-tailed coucal, Red-billed spurfowl, White-browed coucal, Scharlow's turaco, Copper sunbird, Long-toed lapwing, Eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Malagasy pond heron, Soft-plumaged petrel, Orange-winged pytilia.
