Redbilled Oxpeckers back at Mokala.

Unread post by Rooies » Tue Sep 25, 2012 2:04 pm

Some good news from Mokala. After an absence of 60 years, 22 Oxpeckers were released in Mokala National Park. Due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides by cattle farmers, oxpeckers became extinct more than 60 years ago. 22 of them were caught in Limpopo province and held in quarantine for a couple of weeks. They have now been released.

Thanks for this interesting info, Rooies 8) I'll be on the lookout for them at the end of October, otherwise would not have known that they'd be considered a rare sighting at Mokala!

Has anyone spotted them lately? How are they adapting?
