Karoo National Park Birding Weekend - September 2012

Unread post by Owl » Tue May 15, 2012 2:37 pm

Karoo National Park offers many of the endemic Karoo birds and arid specials that birders and nature lovers must chase. Verreaux's (Black) Eagles are also a major attraction of the park's mountainous regions.

The Honorary Rangers are hosting a birding weekend from 14th to 16th September. Interested participants should contact Maria at 023 414 3615, 073 019 9353 or to reserve a place. The event is sponsored by SASOL and Stretton.

There are many diverse habitats in the park that are good for birds. The Klipspringer Pass offers chances of layard's titbabblers, cinnamon-breasted warblers, black-headed canaries, pale-winged starlings and of course the eagles. The Karoo scrub in the plains areas can produce avian delicacies like Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig's Bustard, Karoo Eremomela, Namaqua Sandgrouse and various larks and chats. But some of the best birding is around the main camp, camping site and Ou Skuur Interpretive Centre, where one can expect to find things like Fairy Flycatcher, Southern Tchagra, Dusky Sunbird, African Rock Pipit, Pririt Batis and so much more.
