Brown-backed Honeybird / Skerpbekheuningvoël / Prodotiscus regulus

Seen at Badplaas Forever Resort in October this year

Breeding: It is a brood parasite. Hosts include cisticolas and warblers, all spp with spherical nests.

Habitat: Savanna, open woodland, thickets, thorn scrub and forest edges.

Foraging & Food: Gleans insects from foliage and twigs in the canopy; also forages in tall grass in swampy meadows. Hovers around flowers, sometimes hawks insects like a flycatcher.

I rate this as one of my top 5 bird sightings of all time.

As Adansonia mentioned, Brown-backed Honeybirds are brood parasites. One of their hosts is Black-chested Prinia and Tuesday I was fortunate enough to watch the foster parents feed a young Honeybird.

The young one wasn't very happy with how its food was presented initially and the parent had to simply remove the insect and feed it again. :lol:
