Violet-backed Starling - where to see?

Unread post by Yoda » Fri Jul 01, 2016 3:21 pm

So one of those life long wants, but ever elusive sightings.
I have never seen Violet-Backed Starlings

We will be in Kruger in the 2nd week of November.
Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara
Where is a good area to look for them?

Thanks

yoda,

These birds are migrants that you will normally see in Kruger during September - May, so it is quite possible to come across them during your visit to Kruger during November  .

If you read Here it is not a bird that you will see that often, however you might find them at Satara and Lower Sabie during your November visit.

We were lucky to find some at the Hippo pools during March 2016  .

Barry, thanks for the info.
Satara and LS seem a good bet. Stayed at both camps many times in the past, hopefully this will be my lucky trip.

Have a look here at the reporting data:
http://sabap2.adu.org.za/species_info.php?spp=736

I am not sure where in Kruger you will be, but I have personally got them along the Lower Sabie-Skukuza road a number of times, also seen them in Letaba, the male was moving around the dead trees near the sign board demarcating the flood line.

Looking at the map they have a higher reporting rate up north (Punda, Pafuri area.)

Goodluck and we look forward to seeing the pictures

Hi Yoda,

they are very approachable at the Mugg and Bean at Olifants in October and November when the fig tree on the deck is carrying fruit.

Beautiful picture, WTM.

I will also look out for one in December when I stay at Balule.

One visited us on Christmas day in the Cradle. I was thriĺled. They really are like Christmas decorations when the sun hits their plumage.

Everyone, thanks for your suggestions.
I will be in areas of Kruger where all of you have seen them. Will hopefully get lucky and see some this time.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

As I have just returned from Kruger and have been in the same areas you are going to visit, I can tell you that violet backed Starling should not be a problem I guess.

We have seen them on 8 out of 12 days in the park. Sometimes in good numbers sometimes in pairs. Especially common around Berg En Dal.
