We used to see them when we lived in Ferndale in the 1980s but I haven't seen one in years.

Any thoughts on this bird (apologies for the poor quality photographs, these were taken at quite a distance and old age creates a few shakes).

Photograph taken at Basotho Cultural Village, Golden Gate NP, In April of 2014.
Taken early-ish int he morning, was quite a vocal fellow...sat calling on the same pole for a good few minutes.

I have basically given up on making a positive ID....

#1 is a red-throated wryneck.
728 Latest lifers: Hartlaub's babbler, Coppery-tailed coucal, Red-billed spurfowl, White-browed coucal, Scharlow's turaco, Copper sunbird, Long-toed lapwing, Eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Malagasy pond heron, Soft-plumaged petrel, Orange-winged pytilia.

I must admit, the Wryneck was not one of the options I considered.. :redface: Amazing how obvious the right ID is once you get given the answer!
