Cisticola, red-faced

Unread postby Johan van Rensburg » Mon Dec 14, 2009 2:54 pm

The Red-faced Cisticola C. erythrops is more often heard than seen. Sometimes the male sings from exposed perch above undergrowth, but most frequently it skulks in dense undergrowth. Its very loud rising song is distinctive and once you have located the source of song, waiting patiently and the bird will eventually show.

It is a locally common to fairly common resident found primarily in the northern lowveld of South Africa in rank vegetation associated with marshes, along streams and rivers and bordering reed beds.

It usually is solitary, but sometimes found in pairs and in family groups after breeding. It feeds on small insects.

The LBJ I think is a Red-faced Cisticola.

Cheers

Niall.

This looks a little like red-faced cisticola to me?! I have no references, but something doesnt look right for rattling, it appears too plain and the bill appears less robust and a little more decurved......what habitat was it seen in?! near a river..I hope?!

KobusF- Red Faced Cisticola
Once you see warblers and cisticolas more you will see small, but prominent ID factors. In this case the short wings and long tail, as well as a bit of brown around the ear area, indicative of Red faced Cisticola

Nice shot JvR. They aren't the easiest birds to photograph. This is my best out-of-focus effort to date.
