Cisticola, wing-snapping

Unread post by Johan van Rensburg » Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:08 pm

Wing-snapping cisticola, Cisticola ayresii prefers high altitudinal short grassland with patches of bare ground. This one I "shot" in KZN near Zaaihoek Dam just south east of Volksrust.

At 9 cm overall length, this is the smallest cisticola in our region. With four other cisticolas, it forms a small clade of "Cloudscraper cisticolas" that is often considered the toughest group of LBJs (little brown jobs) to identify its individual members on sight only. The birds' song is often the only way to make an ID call and therefore it is a good investment in time to commit their songs to memory. Many individuals often remain unidentified, especially in winter when they are mostly quiet.

The wing-snapping cisticola is named so for its habit of audibly snapping its wings, especially when alarmed.
725 Latest lifers: Common whitethroat, Swamp boubou, Hartlaub's babbler, Chirping cisticola, Coppery-tailed coucal, Red-billed spurfowl, White-browed coucal, Scharlow's turaco, Copper sunbird, Long-toed lapwing.

Now that is very cute. Stunning :cam: 8)
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.
